Help! No ratration mix for hamsters until further notice- any advice what now?
Hello guys,
I am going away for Easter so to make sure Poppy, Eleanor and my mice enjoy their usual ratrations I just went on the website to order more food and it said its suspended until further notice as apparently there were concerns it may not be balanced enough?!
Hello??? I mean then none of the stuff available in shops should be aloud to be sold as its certainly lacking in stuff. I am appalled, all my furries prefer that mix and as I feed them lots of other things as well in addition I am sure they get their right nutrition...
Does anyone know anything about this and any other advice on what other food? I always have a backup Harry Hamster which is liked but not as much as the ratrations for obvious reasons, and for my Robo Poppy I am really concerned now as she is a very picky eater....

Mixes get suspended, discontinued, changed etc all the time. My hammies were all on a mix then it just stopped and I had to find an alternative. It may come back but there is more than just one mix on the market so use your back up and shop around again is all you can do x

Get a bag of burgess and a mix of seeds/grains off RR and mix them up, that's what I do.

You can still buy the ratration hamster mixes from them by phone, they just want to make sure that people buying are getting the advice about supplementing appropriately.

Mine used to be on the RR mixes. My Syrian is now on Harry Hamster and Selective Science Mixed together and my Robo is on the same but with added JR Farm Feast for Dwarf Hamsters and they're both fine, empty bowls from both of them every day

It is probably best to get something like those above are suggesting without having to HAVE to supplement. It would be difficult to know if you are giving them exactly the extras they need. The proper amounts of vitamin and buying all those vitamin supplements would be a pain.
I get the Harry equivalent here in the states : Hazel. If it's anything like Harry then it's good stuff.

Everyone should supplement, not just for RR mixes. No hamster, dog, cat, etc should be kept on the same food with no variation. There's evidence that "complete" food mixes lead to immune system boredom and ingredient allergies.
The reason is that there really is no way to tell the exact vitamin and mineral needs of an animal - most dietary information is anecdotal. There are studies, where they watch the condition of an animal under laboratory conditions, but they can be extremely misleading because of the dosing method of whatever medium they're using. Animal feed is not a highly regulated or tested.
Vary your base mix with fresh veggies (and fruits, if applicable to your variety of hamster). You can also add commercial vitamins to their diet and/or water.

I hate to say it, but the RR mixes seemed to be lacking in more things than commercial mixes. My Robo has become more active since I changed him to a commercial mix, and my Syrian's coat and condition has greatly improved. Plud my Syrian actually likes her new mix better

Same here, I used to mix the RR with the HH but have now swapped to SS and HH, and my hammie is fine. I changed over because I can't be doing with the extra supplements and I would worry I would be doing it wrong anyway. Edited to say that I also give fresh veg (a tiny piece) each day and he really likes that too.
