Default Supahamster dwarf mix

Our chinese hamsters are on the excel supahamster mix, the one in the yellow bag.

They were on P@H mix but we have gradually moved them onto this new mix and they are eating a lot more of it than they were eating the P@H mix. They will eat all of it as long as I don't give them any more. They sometimes leave a couple of those grass pellet things but like I said only when I top them up (usually if I know I'm going to be out of the house for a day or two).

Anyway, my question is, is this mix okay for chinese hams?? They don't have any problem eating it at all so they must like it. All the hams will be switching over to silver's mixes soon but that will only be when I can afford to buy a bulk order from RatRations

Hello Knotty,

The burgess one is a ok mix, the protein is too low. It has pea flakes & corn in which are high in natural sugar once digested so not great for Chinese being diabetes prone.

You can take them out trouble is then you don't know what % you are feeding. There is not a idea mix on the market I'm afraid.

You could look at this one Science Selective Hamster | Supreme Pet Foods

It's better sugar wise but is a pellet diet, some hams won't eat a pellet diet & if they do I would not keep the ham on it for long as it is so boring for them

Thank you for looking at this thread Silver.

I really didn't want to feed them a pellet diet as I think they would get very bored of it and it seems cruel to be giving them a boring pellet diet every day when Pepsi (syrian) is getting her normal hamster mix.

They are on the supahamster mix as it is all I can afford right now and it is a lot better than the p@h mix they were on. I'm aware that the peas and corn in it are quite sugary but it doesn't seem to have a lot in them so they should be alright on it until I can do a bulk ratrations order shouldn't they?? They don't get any other sugary treats or anything.

It's a hard question for me, as I know it's not a ideal food & I always go for the ideal in anything if that makes sense?

But I do understand not being able to afford the mix.

Have you looked at bird seed mix's?. The ideal % are: Protein 19% Fat 6% Fibre 8% have a look & see if there is a bird food mix near these % then read the ingredients

I've not looked into the bird mixes. I hope to get your mix soon!! What size bag would you say is the best value if I have two chinese hamsters?? How long do the bags last per ham?? I hate not having the ideal amount of nutrients for the hams but I am working on getting their diet perfect

Silver is right knotty. The mix you are using is okay (I use the Burgess Supahamster but not the dwarf version, the one with the syrian pictured on the yellow bag) and I have a roborovski and a syrian. None of which are diabetic prone so I don`t have to worry about diabetes.

I did have a chinese female however and I fed her this same mix because it has more grains in it than the dwarf version, but I removed all the yellow corn/flaked maize, pea flakes and alfalfa as the alfalfa/grass pellets never got eaten. I`ve never had a hamster, mouse or a gerbil eat those!

So yes, I agree that looking at things like millet varieties like a canary mix, which usually has linseed and hemp seed already in it aswell as a mix of millet seeds and sometimes little bits of yellow egg biscuit, which you could also buy loose from a pet shop. Rat Rations sell this aswell, but Silver`s mixes have egg biscuit included.

You could also safely add plain porridge oats dry to their mix.

For one Dwarf feeding one teaspoon roughly a day they get through 1kg a year "roughly"

The mix's are good for a year from when you buy them if you keep it in a air tight container
