Default Dog Biscuits

I just bought some dog biscuits which are called Milky 'Bones'. Can anyone confirm that they are okay to give to hamsters? I'm guessing they would be alright.

I'm sure they're fine. I give dog biscuits to my hamsters, and I also to my rats. But as a dog enthusiast, I would never give my dogs Milk Bones. You can get higher quality biscuits. Look for brands like Canidae, Nutro, California Natural, Old Mother Hubbard, Natures Animals, Blue Buffalo, Welless WellBars, etc.

I use Wellness WellBars (Yogurt, Apples, and Bananas), and sometimes Blue Buffalo Health Bars (Bananas and Yogurt). I give these to my dogs so I always have some available. They're made up of really good quality ingredients.

obscura, we don't really have those brands widely available in the UK. our better quality dog food brands are probably Burns, Arden Grange and Lily's Kitchen. the more easily accessible, commercial brands which aren't as great seem to be Winalot and Butchers. I say this based on what I hear friends prefer to feed their dogs, so don't take my word for it since I don't have a dog of my own!

My little ones get Milk Bones. They seem to enjoy them. Roxy loves to run away with hers as soon as I put it in the cage. She takes it to her stash immediately which is pretty funny considering it's practically the size of her.

Cathface, ooh goodness! I always forget that many of you live in the UK or Canada! Sorry about that! In that case, I can't voice my opinion. For those in the US or in an area where they can get the brands I listed, they are high quality ingredients, very healthy, and not much more expensive than Milk Bones.

My dislike of Milk Bones came along with my dogs. I became a huge dog enthusiast. I'm extremely picky about the quality of the food my dogs and small animal ingest. Purina, Beneful, Pedigree, Iams, Eukanuba, Old Roy... There are all very crappy foods (although some of those brands are starting to come out with better formulas because more and more people are turning their noses away from their lower quality products). Anything found in a grocery store, no matter where you live, is likely to be lower quality.

Milk Bones aren't going to kill a hamster or a dog, but the reason I don't trust them is because they don't even tell you what kind of meat meal they use in the ingredients. Overall the meat and bone meal advertised in these products is just a low-cost ingredient.

California Natural biscuits are made up of Lamb Meal, Rice, Oatmeal, Rolled Oats...

Compared to Milk Bones Wheat Flour, Wheat Bran, Meat and Bone Meal, Milk, Wheat Germ, Beef Fat, Salt.

When looking for dog biscuits, avoid cane molasses. That's the one ingredient that quite a few dog biscuits have (I went through my list and all but California Natural and some Nutro Ultra biscuits are without cane molasses in the ingredients). I have dwarf hamsters so I try not to feed them anything with cane molasses (it's surprising how many hamster foods here have cane molasses in them!).

Nutro Ultra Biscuits: Whole brown rice, ground rice, oatmeal, whole oats, chicken meal, pumpkin, flaxseed, lamb meal, salmon meal, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), oat fiber, dried plain beet fiber, sunflower oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols), egg, natural flavors, inulin, tomato pomace, dried blueberry, dried pumpkin, dried pomegranate, dried spinach, dried carrot, dried cranberry, preserved with mixed tocopherols.

The Nutro Ultra biscuits seem to have the most quality meats, fruits, and veggies.

Maybe that info can help someone in the US.

Anyway, there is nothing wrong with Milk Bone biscuits for your hamsters, or your dogs. Out of preference, I don't feed that particular brand. But there isn't anything in the ingredients that would be harmful to your pets, and that's the main thing

All good information thanks. I take the point about the better quality ingredients so I'll try the brands which cathface suggested.

Sadly, I'm unable to have a dog due to lack of space and garden but I'll be sure to give them the better quality foods when the times comes obscura! (I have to stop myself looking at the dogsblog rescue website - I'd be taking in a dog every other week if it was possible, especially the older ones as people seem to overlook them and they are the ones that need the most help. Obviously, I'm always looking at rescue hamsters as well ...)

Haha yay! I hope I didn't sound rude or anything. I always have to watch how I say things. I only recently (in the last 2 years) got into this stage where I want everyone to feed what I think is "the best." LOL Just smack me if I get out of line

I totally know how you feel - I used to volunteer at a dog shelter and I wanted to bring them all home with me! Back then I had a mother to tell me NO! Now I have THREE dogs and FOUR hamster!!! I also raised two rescued rats and a hedgehog! @_@

I promise I am not a hoarder! Though admittedly I could easily become one... I do limit myself though. It gets expensive having high standards for food quality and cage space and all that, so I couldn't afford TOO many pets :P but for the ones I do have, I try to take real good care of them.

I think you'd be an awesome dog mom

Thank you! It is really hard when you see all those dogs who just want love and affection and a place to call their own. Their faces break your heart. I lived in California for a year and volunteered at a dog shelter - it was probably fortuitous that I was just visiting the country as there was no chance of me being able to keep a rescue. But I wouldn't take in a pet if I wasn't able to give it the space and time it deserved. Earlier this year I was going to get two older (2 years) hammies from the RSPCA who had been on the website for a long time. I bought large cages but they both found homes - hopefully good ones.

And don't worry, you didn't sound rude at all!
