Default What is everyone's favorite food for hammie?

The reason why I am asking this is because I use Kaytee fiesta. I like it but want to give the little ones the best that I can. I am giving them oranges, strawberries, peanuts, and apple pieces. Just wondering what else people like and use.

Default foods

Peanut, I used to use the forti diet but then someone here, (Sorry I can't remember who off hand?) said it contained an additive, I think begining with "M" ? Can't remember. Anyway, they said that the US brand "Hazel hamster" didn't have this ingredient in it so I switched to it. Nibbles seems to eat more of this food, doesn't leave as much as he used to with the forti diet (although I'm sure this is a very good food!) He still leaves the little brown compacted pellets but eats pretty much all the rest of it and doesn't scatter it about all over the place like he used to!

So, thats what I use - along with the fresh stuff of course

Default What they like

Ours like broccoli and lettuce but only in small amounts. We have heard that citrus fruits like oranges are bad for hams so we don't give them that .

There's an article on the hamster central site listing lots of fruit, veg and other ideas for treats/food for hams

http://www.hamstercentral.com/a_treats.htm

Cucumber is a firm favourite in this house, the girls go loopy over it. Apple always goes down well with Alfie, and the boy robos always go for raisins and banana. They all also love millet sprays in their cages.

For staple mix I use Burgess SupaHamster at the moment, although I am considering mixing up my own hamster dry mix (there's a naughty hamster who picks out all the sunflower seeds!). Once my exams are out of the way I might look at it in more detail - look at hamster nutritional requirements and work out my own mix.

High-protein treats are good for the babies and mum - things like cooked chicken, ham, cheese, scrambled or boiled egg, cooked soybeans, cottage cheese, tofu, other cooked beans.

Default Ethoxyquin.

Thanks Babyboos, it was the Ethoxyquin that was the additive I couldn't remember! For some reason I thought it began with "M"! Oh well!

And for the record - no, "Hazel Hamster" (Harry Hamster in the UK) does not contain this ingredient

Default Lab blocks

Lab blocks are the best food you can get in the USA - they are not so readily available for us guys in UK, failing lab blocks I would recommend Hazel Hamster (Harry to us here in UK).
