Q About A Certain Food For Diabetic Dwarf Hamsters
Hey all so after doing some looking around I do believe that my lil man may be diabetic. He fits all the symptoms but just waiting for the little test strips to get here. So now on to the food when I looked on amazon.com for the Supreme Hazel Hamster of course it brought up other suggestions including
Kaytee Forti Diet Pro Health Food for Hamsters and Gerbils
http://www.amazon.com/Kaytee-Health-...t+hamster+food
Is this food good for diabetic hammies?
I know that I don't know yet but I am a planner and am just trying to find the best of the best.

Re: Q About A Certain Food For Diabetic Dwarf Hamsters
Not really, I wouldn't recommend it for any hamster to be honest. The protein levels are way low (13.5%) and the first ingredient on the ingredients list is corn, which I believe is the stuff other people pick out of their diabetic-prone hamsters' mixes. It also contains dried cane molasses and "fructooligosaccharide" (another sugar -- anything ending in "ose", e.g. "fructose"/"glucose", or "saccharide" is based on a sugar).
Most people in the US with diabetic/diabetic prone hams I think use Hazel Hamster or Burgess and pick out the corn bits. I don't think there is a diabetes-prone-specific commercial mix available in the US.

I don't know about the US but one of the biggest problems I found was buying treats which didn't contain sugars. I used plain popcorn which went down very well.

Yea I've had the same. When I first got him he came with 3 bags of treats. Mini Pop Tarts, these things that looked like mini chocolate covered pretzels, and mini cupcakes. I've heard some people bake treats but no recipes.
