Default Re: Syrian Mix Banana, Apple & A Plain One?

I just wanted to say that I really feel that Silver's mix for dwarfs is so much better for having the mealworms and the krill in.

I do actually take the mealworms out of my hamster's daily spoonful to hand feed these, as they are his favourite - I can use them to manipulate him a little, hehe. But, see, because I know the mix is balanced, I know I am not overfeeding him his favourite food and it works well for me. Furthermore, the mealworms in the mix are really good quality.

I would be really upset if the krill and mealworms were taken out! The krill as well is brilliant because he smells it from a mile away and loves his food.

I would really recommend it, krill and mealworms and everything.

Silver, my instinct is that although I don't have a Syrian, because of the *sugar* content of the fruit, people will be more cautious about it. Mealworms and krill seem more obviously part of a balanced diet but fruit seems more like the occasional treat. That's just my gut instinct.

Hello Lydia,

Thank You. Yes having the mealworms & the krill to me also makes a much more balanced mix. And as you say you can hand feed the mealworms on there own if you like.

When I tried this afternoon to make a cheaper mix it was going along with Burgess Dwarf mix except no grass pellets really as most of the different seeds were taken out.

Ratrations is not a cheap site to be honest. The two reasons are they buy human grade seeds/grains so it is more expensive than a lesser quality. And they buy the best quality mealworms which are stonker's in size. The other reason is the postage which I have no control over.

I will keep trying though, as I say one of the big boy's in the hamster food market has taken a interest in a dwarf mix, very early day's though.

when my 5kg sack runs out (just about half way since feburary to 7/8 hamsters) I will order more of mix one, because I throw away so little of it, and I can see how the linseed has helped with fur, everyone loves it and to me thats what matters.
I have added a small amount of extras into it as I go, but thats for bulking up.

If in the future I was to have no chinese/hybrid/rc I would be tempted to get the plain mix.

I agree with everyone else, fruit should be a treat, I do have dried banana chips in my rabbit goodie box, and the hamsters barely touch it, or take it and dump it on the biscuit pile and thats about it.
I remember when using harry hamster it was eaten, but compared to their dwarf mix they are thrown aside.

I do plan on keeping some dwarfs, and even with the price difference, I could always get 5kg (or 5kg dwarf and a smaller bag of syrian) of each, mix them together, making it last longer, and having the same balance it shouldnt throw it too much.

on a side note, I have been using some go-cat kitten biscuits 36% protien (and calcium for my babys ) and low fat 6-8 % i think, I know mix 3 had peas and kibble, but would something along those lines help?

Funny you should say that Vanilla,

RR has told me this morning they have just got some good quality high protein cat kibble. Now with the burns kibble which is in one of the dwar mix's & the Syrian mix's it has a small amount of pea in it so I could not add it to the diabetes prone mix.

I do not know anything else about it as they have not had time to put it on the website yet they are so busy that is also why the apple Syrian mix is not on yet. I have asked them to send me a small amount of the cat kibble when they have 5 mins to see if my hammy's will eat it,& what it is made of.

Then if the ingredients are ok for diabetes prone hams then I would need to wait for RR to work out the % & add it to the work sheet so I can fiddle about with it & make a mix.

Now if all of that went well it "should" bring down the price a bit. But it will take a while to do all of that because they are so very busy, which in one way is a advantage as all the ingredients are re brought regularly meaning fresh & gives us a years use by date from when you buy it.

thats awesome!!

My lot like the cat biscuits, i checked the ingrediants first, and it looked ok, I normally put 1-2 pinches, a pinch of oats to about 4 large teaspoons of the mix, and give it a stir (more for lucy) they seem to eat it, I give them also for dianna, with her teeth she isnt keen on anything too hard, she wont open a peanut up, but they are easyer for her to break, so will keep her teeth down

I wasnt sure mine would eat the kibble, as that and the afalfa was always left from the old harry mix, and the flat orangey seeds, but now all but one clear the bowl every time, and mr fussy leaves a few meal worms only, he eats some, but then running is more importiant.

Its great you are able to adjust as you go

Yes I thought once I had made the mix's that would be it, but no! I think RR & HC have adopted me as a permanent food mix maker

I will always keep the basic dwarf hamster mix diabetes prone as it is, then if I can add another choice for the diabetes prone which hopefully will be cheaper then brilliant.

But as I say there's a lot of if's there to get past.

Hi Silver,
Great news about the mixes. I would also be inclined to go for the plain one as Rudi only gets fruit as a treat. If the plain won't be available for a while, I would buy the banana in the meantime and pick the bits out. Will it be exactly the same apart from the banana/apple?

At the moment he is on your Dwarf Mix 3 with flaked peas and kibble and he does seem to really enjoy it. He gets half dwarf mix and half Wagg as I wanted to give him bigger bits to chomp on. I'll buy the Syrian mix and phase the Wagg out. I guess it would be ok to mix the dwarf & syrian together in equal measure?

Hello Rudi,

The plain one is all ready to be put on RR website when they have 5 mins to make up a batch take a pic & write it up on the website. I made the mix & tested it along with the Apple/Banana one's.

Yes the plain mix has the same ingredients as the fruit ones just jiggled about to make the % right.

Yes mixing the dwarf & Syrian mix together in equal amounts is good, balanced.

Ok then the people of HC have spoken & I will let RR know tomorrow that they can put the plain Syrian Mix on sale. Like I said it will be a few day's before they get time to make a batch take a pic & put the details on the website. I will let you all know when it goes on there.

Thank You All for your help

Ah great news, thanks.

Will put in another order as soon as it goes up, as I'm down to half a bag of my dwarf mix just now.
