Re: Treat ideas for a syrian?
The cheesy ones would probably go down well or egg biscuits. I`ll see what I can get locally but I can`t get to our Pets At Home as I don`t drive. Hopefully my pet supplier can get me a few from his stockist though.

Re: Treat ideas for a syrian?
Thanks again for those Jandrhamster. I bought a couple of things in my local pet suppliers this morning but will look into everything you guys have posted for future reference. Today I just bought:
Supreme Harry carrot and apple treats: These are kind of oblong squares like dog biscuits in texture in three colours. Should keep Boris gnawing for a wee while since he loves carror and apple flavours!
Johnson`s wafer seed bar: Just one of those honey nut seed bars with a thin wafer sandwich.
That was all they really had in stock which was of interest. Looks like I will have to go online and buy some better ones if I want a variety of hews and treats for him in future.

I don't drive either so can't get to Pets at Home unless son gives me a lift as it's really awkward to get to here. Think last time I was there was 3 years ago when I bought a budgie cage.
Luckily there's a good pet shop in city centre near where I work so am able to get naturals range and locust treats there.
The natures best bars and egg biscuits were from Tescos so don't know it there's one near where you live. Oh and the naturals cheese ones were off ebay.

Re: Treat ideas for a syrian?
Oh thanks Tracey. I do have a local Tesco and will be in there next week so will definately look for the egg biscuits! Boris loves the Supreme Harry biscuit treats I bought! I leave one on his shelf and one near his food dish each afternoon and by the time he wakes up, the biscuits disappear! They are smaller in size than I thought (about an inch long and quite thin) so I only give him one or two every few days. The seed bar I will let him have nearer Christmas!

Re: Treat ideas for a syrian?
I very very rarely buy any of my guys the premade treats from pet shops or sites. Instead I buy various varieties of fruits and natural things that are hand fed as treats. I buy individual components and mix my own rat food so I use rat rations to buy the things I use as treats.
Some of the favourites include
- dried apple rings (these are great for hanging in the cage and very very easy to make yourself)
- dried fruit pieces including apricots and cranberries
- mixed nuts in and out of shells including brazil, walnut, hazelnut
- dried coconut curls
- dried insects and seafood
- burns chicken and rice dog kibble
The only treat I have at the moment is a trixie treat whole hazelnuts covered in yogurt. Greyjoy goes mad for them and I brought them from rat warehouse.

Re: Treat ideas for a syrian?
Great ideas there Gamina, will definately have a go! Like you, I don`t usually buy over-the-counter treats, but every now and then, I feel the urge to buy something off-shelf, but I do prefer giving human grade monkey nuts and fresh apple etc....
I`ll be having a good old rummage in the supermarkets next week for some special nuts and dried fruits! Yum. x

When you have roast chicken, the hamsters will love some small pieces of that!

Re: Treat ideas for a syrian?
Not sure if Boris would go for that but might give it a try. I`m not too keen on meats. Good protein source right enough.

Re: Treat ideas for a syrian?
My hamsters never liked mealworms, but they'd snatch the chicken from me the moment they smelt it lol
