My ~1 year old hybrid Lucy has been diagnosed with Chronic Renal Failure / Chronic Kidney Disease. Along with low protein in her diet, low phosphate and sodium content is recommended. Problem is, lots of good foods are high or moderate in phosphorus constituents. And most hamster mixes seem to contain phosphorus additives (general food additives can be Calcium phosphate, Disodium phosphate, Phosphoric acid, Tricalcium phosphate, Monopotassium phosphate, Pyrophosphate polyphosphates) and most have added salt (sodium chloride).
Then, foods that are good for hamsters are also high in phosphorus, like oats, peanuts, flax seeds (good for omega-3), broccoli, spinach, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds,... You get the idea...
So has anyone tried putting together a reasonable list of foods low to moderate in phosphorus and sodium and protein for hamsters with kidney failure? (usually elderly hamsters) I'm working on a list right now, but if anyone has contributions, Lucy and I would be very grateful
