I have had Timoty hay for my hamsters and although they do not do much with it, they use it to make burrows. However, I am now trying hay from the woodlands range, I believe it is softer and I think they might like it more. I will let you know once I have introduced it to them tomorrow!

I've always given a little bit of hay. Mostly because I've always had other pets that have 'small pet' hay so I like to give the hammies some. Just make sure there are no sharp bits in it and it should be fine. I use timothy or meadow hay. You also have to make sure it is 'dust extracted' and small pet safe, as this means that there wont be any mites in the hay. Some of my hamsters have loved hay and others have ignored it completely

personally i would avoid hay, it can be very sharp and spikey, and can even have splinters in it (speaking from the experiance of hay splinters, they are painful!!) in my opinion there are much better options out there, and as its not needed for their diet it just isnt worth the risk

hay doesnt have to be particularly sharp to do damage, have you ever seen the damage a hay poke can do to a guinea pigs eyes? even soft stranded stuff

also, alfalfa doesnt have to be sharp we have some lovely soft green alfalfa, our timothy is much harsher then it

Some pet shops sell timothy and alfalfa in mini bales so its processed into a pellet like form but its pure hay. My hammies have always loved these. They get the added advantage of the taste with none of the risk of pointy bits. They are kinda like this but I buy mine at a little pet shop so they are not the same brand.
