I gawd I see a long and hard time ahead! I'll keep you posted on our progress!

That cage is a great size for a hammy in my opinion, also you can take the wire out from the bottom of those, we used to have the two storey type for the rats. You could probably put some correx or something around the edges, there is a little bit of room for manouvering with the base, so you could possibly put correx outside the wire depending on the thickness of it, to make the base deeper without it being open to chewing.
Congrats on your first hammy

Thank you and yes he does seem to really like it. I put him in a much larger cage 2 weeks ago and he hated it, did not settle at all and then escaped!

He had his first night in it last night, I put some of the bedding from his old cage in there as well to help him settle but he seems very happy. I have removed the mesh floor at the bottom, could'nt see the point of it and we'll see how the digging goes. I have correx from the guineas so thats a good idea. Just off to get him some toys now! So far so good!!!

BTW, he has a huge exercise wheel but it seems very stiff, is this normal, has anyone else seen this before? I am putting some vaseline on it today to see if this helps but if I loosen the screw, the whole fixing is too loose.....ideas?

Thanks everyone so far!!

Which wheel is it (brand etc.)? Could be defective or assembled incorrectly.

Its a Savic. The core of the mounting was just moulded too big so I have filed it down and it now works perfectly so I have one very happy Peanut!

Oh that's great From what I've read, savic wheels are either a hit or a miss, so hopefully yours will be good from now on. If you decide to upgrade, I'd highly recommend Jr. and Sr. Wodent Wheels and Trixie 11" wheel (wodent wheel-like).

So glad you're able to keep Peanut! He sounds adorable and you obviously love him to bits! I bet he's having a lovely time with you as his 'new' hamummy!
