There isn't anything supporting the sandbath other than the substrate, thank you so much for pointing that out. Thank goodness it was light and only having about 2mm of sand right now. l'll totally put in a box that will sit under said sand bath and go down to the bottom of the bin, with holes for the 2 tunnels leading off of that burrow for her. She does prefer this area for sleeping the past few days, so I'm putting this in the next time she's up.

I do have a good amount of toilet paper tubes, and will make some extra things out of popsicle sticks and non-toxic kids glue. I also have another wooden platform like the one under her dish but without side rails. Definitely changing out the saucer asap, going to pick up a wheel for her tonight.

As far as taming & interacting with her, she's definitely tame and we do seem to have a bond. She finally lets me pet her, and I think actually enjoyed it a bit behind the left ear. We played for almost an hour, with a few breaks in between. Normally she's one and done for bit, but today she kept coming back almost right away and "rang the bell" if I wasn't near. It was a very special day

All Tuckered Out
Aww! She is so cute and looks so cosy!

Lol!! Pearl is quite literally flat out!

Make sure you get a big enough wheel of at least 20cm because she'll grow yet. You can leave the saucer in as an additional wheel as some dwarfs really like them.

You are so lucky to have a dwarfie like Pearl and she's lucky to have you.

I got exactly that, her 20 cm comfort wheel finally came in today! It took a few investigations, but she uses it! Big improvement over the saucer for her.

And thank you so much, she is a bundle of joy

Initial test, and scurry
Third time's the charm!
A bit of petting

Edit: after one night of having the new wheel, Pearl's behavior has changed in the most positive way. She's not wary of the surface at all anymore, and goes on this thing for hours.

It's great to see her coming alive, this has been a MASSIVE upgrade for her. I thought her doing the wheel overnight was normal for her, but apparently she just disliked the saucer that much.

Thanks so much guys! She is a cute little oddball, and I think she'll be ready for me to introduce a new hide & toy I've made for her this weekend. It feels like a good time to go for it.

Her behavior has changed noticeably over the past 3 days she's had the new wheel. It all seems positive, I don't know how else to put it other than she's more "hamstery". Her confidence is through the roof, and she absolutely loves the wheel. Often going on it for 6 hours with breaks in between. She's no longer afraid of being on the surface at all, and is definitely making the enclosure her own.

Two of her quirks are still the same. She does prefer her wheel time being a private venture most of the time, but a couple of short interactions are okay. Last night she was definitely showing off a bit for me and running to my hand in between sprints as if to say "look how fast I can go human!"

And my morning/her bedtime is still hamster approved cuddle time. Without fail she's always up to greet me, and we bond for about 10 minutes.

She also did have a nightmare this morning and was super chatty about it. I gave her a special treat, a little bit of plain orgranic greek yogurt I had. Pearl deserved it, and she gave me a little parting present in a paw print. Don't worry, she only had a tiny bit of it, I just filled the spoon for easier access. She was clearly tired, and needed some help finding it too.

It's a bit dark, but she was zooming up a storm!
Digging, building, and making it her own!

Special post-nightmare treat!

It's really quite magical what you and Pearl have. Call me a crazy old bat if you like but i do believe that sometimes hamsters chose us and the bond is instant. No settling in time or taming required. I had a similar experience with my little dwarf hybrid Edwina.

She really did seem to pick me out when we met at the PetSmart, I think you're right Ria. And thanks Cloudy, I'm so lucky to have her <3

That said, this is just a really rough day for the little girl. She had that nightmare, and was still grumpy when it was time for her "3 am" snack. She just chattered really loud for me to come over from the bedroom. Instantly climbed on my hand and we did still have our approved together time. Seems she's also scratched her nose on something.

I was able to spot clean her bathroom area while she was completely distracted afterwards, she gets half her food at this time.

She found out later, and just dug a new hole right down into the burrow. The S.S. Pearl promptly surfaced and destroyed our play area in response:

Battle of the Play Area!

Edit: Pearl's nose has already healed the next day, and her mood has done a 180. She's back to being a happy little ham, and was really squeaking it up tonight. I think you guys might be able to hear it over the AC, it's such a lovely and cute little sound.

Squeaking on the Wheel

Pearl is no longer upset from having her bathroom spot cleaned, and seems to have finished adjusting to everything in her bin. After a few days of her sort of giving me the cold shoulder, we're back to the close bond we had. She now uses the little plastic castle hide that was untouched, and sometimes climbs on top to sniff the air and survey her kingdom.

I made her the roller & treat ball from this video on Erin's Animals channel:Hamster Toys. I had to make the treat ball a little easier for her to figure out, but she does play with them now.

Her sleep schedule continues to improve, we did our morning human time a few hours earlier. She is finally comfortable with me petting her, and let me do so for 3 minutes today. I think she enjoyed it a bit, she stopped eating and got a little squinty eyed.

Her coat's starting to change, and I've never seen her this happy + full of energy.
