Rescue Winter White
Hi everyone, I would appreciate any advice you could offer regarding my Winter White hamster (male) who is my fourth rescue from Pets at Home. I have had him about three weeks now. When I got him, I was told that he is about ten months old and has always been extremely aggressive to humans, made worse by him being in the store through lockdown. Apparently he only has to get a glimpse of flesh, and he latches on. My main concern is giving him a happy life after being in a tiny glass cage, I don’t mind if he doesn’t want to be petted. He is in a large cage (Alaska I think) with a sand bath, Bridges, tunnels and a wheel. So far, all he seems to do is spend a great deal,of time on the wheel, occasionally jumping off and having a look, then getting back on again. He doesn’t appear to be exploring his surroundings at all. He has taken treats from my hand, but then seems to lose interest. I would very much like him to be able to have a run out of his cage, but would this be too much for him? Also, I will need to clean the cage soon and am unsure how to remove him safely without getting bitten. Any ideas on a good approach for this little chap? Many thanks

If you have an old mug or something similar, you could lower that into his cage for him to go into to lift him out. As for him exploring, he might still be trying to get used to his surroundings so I wouldn’t worry too much about that yet

Re: Rescue Winter White
If he’s been in P@H that long it may take him some time to adjust to a new home & having a nice large cage so just be patient, if you could upload a photo of his cage set up we may be able to offer suggestions if there are any changes that may help.
Most hams will climb into something like a box, large mug or whatever you have that you can safely transport them in, pop a treat inside to tempt him if need be then You can put him in a carrier with some substrate while you clean.
I wouldn’t clean too much as. he’s still settling in, just spot cleaning pee at this stage should be enough & never do a full cage clean.
If he’s from P@H (or any pet shop) he will be a Russian hybrid btw, there are no pure winter white hams in pet shops.

Re: Rescue Winter White
Like you, i also adopted a dwarf from p@h who was a very unhappy little hamster, he was ill and aggressive, bit everything he could get his teeth into but through time and with love and patience he was able to live a happy hamster life which was all i ever wanted for him.
I was never able to pick him up but eventually i could stroke him while he run around on my lap. Percy walked into his mug and i transported him in and out of his cage in his hamster taxi.
I applaud you for taking on a hamster with issues who no doubt, would still be in the pet shop if it weren't for you and believe me, it is so so rewarding to see a hamster like that enjoy life with you.
Talk to him a lot and take it very slow, go at his pace and whatever he feels comfortable with.
Everything is new to him and he probably goes with what he knows and feels secure with just now which is his wheel but he may well be exploring when you're asleep. You are doing everything you can to provide him with a happy life and once he has adjusted to his new world and sniffed out his new surroundings, he'll venture out.
My hamster didn't like a playpen but liked a play bincage with extra toys.
The Alaska is a spacious and airy cage, its a great cage, i have one too but make sure the set up is cozy without exposed areas and with plenty of cover and hidey places. It may be a good idea to tie some mats/boredom breakers around the inside of half of the cage to make it darker.
