Winter white vs Syrian?
Hi everyone!
I'm doing my research before choosing my next hamster, and I'm considering getting a dwarf. I've mostly kept Syrians in the past, and one Chinese. I've found the Chinese too flighty to handle much, while the Syrians have mostly been more laid back.
Now, I've heard that Winter Whites can be calmer and more laid-back compared to other dwarf hamsters. I know this will vary within a species, but could anyone advise me on whether a Winter Whites are similar in temperament to Syrians?
Ideally I'm hoping for a hamster who's tame and easily handleable! Any advice would be appreciated

Re: Winter white vs Syrian?
Hi and welcome to HC!
I’ve only owned WW in the past. Dwarves are more speedy by nature while Syrians are more laid back, this depends on personality though. Syrians tend to be easier to handle because of their large size. Dwarves are incredibly sweet and loving when you earn their trust and begin to have a bond. This all comes down to personal preference.

I have found male syrian hamsters to be laid back. Not had a ww but heard good things about them. You would need to get one from a breeder as most dwarf hamsters in pet shops are hybrids ie a mix of species.

Re: Winter white vs Syrian?
A lot will depend on the individual hams temperament & personality, I've only had Russian hybrids & Chinese so can't really compare to Syrians but they are all very different.
With most species males tend to be more laid back & less hyper than females but there are no hard & fast rules!
If you want a ham that is used to being handled & will probably be easier to tame you would need to go to a good breeder but you would need to do that anyway to get a WW, you won't get one from a pet shop.
I've found Russian hybrids easy to tame & handle.
