My hamster is turning white in the summer?

Hi,

I'm a first time hamster owner and I've had my hamster for about 4 months now. When I got him in January, he was very dark and now (in April) he is turning almost completely white. Is it normal for hamsters to change to this color in the summer? Why is this happening?

The light levels are triggering to change coat colour. As he is a hybrid with strong winter white genes he has actually got it a bit confused and is changing from summer to winter coat. He may change again in autumn. It is not uncommon. There is a colour change thread at the top of the Winter white board.
