Doesn't have a name yet
So, I have a new addition and a name hasn't came to me yet, name suggestions would be appreciated.
I am assuming, from what I have read on here, since she came from a petstore she is not a pure winter white? (can you tell from pics?)
Also, should I have gotten two or will she be fine by herself?
I would like opinions on the best food to feed a dwarf. I have hazel hamster that I feed Chicky plus I bought a bag of Oxbow since that is what the new girl was on at the petstore. I also have Higgins Sunburst food mix, millet, peanuts, and dried fruit.(the dried fruit is more for my rats)
Here she is:

Re: Doesn't have a name yet
It is likely she is a hybrid as she is a pet shop hamster. As pet shops don't get their hamsters from proper breeders, the breeding is not monitored and they are often just money and so the pedigree is not cared about...as hybrids also can have different colours, shops can also try and sell them for more and so it's just 'profit' to them.
You will need to look at information on hybrids if you haven't already, especially their diet because they are prone to diabetes and so anything with high sugar should be monitored and they usually are put on special dwarf hamster mixes.
She will also be fine alone! Even if she was in a pair, there is no guarantee it would last forever as fights can break out even between siblings or after a while of being together.

Re: Doesn't have a name yet
Hello Wylie. She is adorable. I also have hybrids. I feed them:
Hazel Hamster
Ecotrition Essential Blend for hamsters: I like this because of the smaller size food bits
Kaytee Gourmet Variety Diet for parakeet (Dwarfies like the small seeds)
Oxbow Healthy Essentials: This is a block food containing all the nutrients in one food
For treats I give them: Millet, insect mix (meal worms, crickets & grasshoppers), Muesli, fresh fruit/veggies and they get an occasional mini milk bone dog biscuit. Other folks have different diets for their hams, but my Toffee & Almond seem happy enough with this. Hope to see more of your little ones.

Re: Doesn't have a name yet
Thank you both!
Chicky has been so simple to feed, some fresh veggies and fruits, then her hazel hamster food and some dried meal worms, she is a syrian though. I vaguely remember that she was eating dried bread and donuts before I got her, I am not sure what else they gave her.(my memory is gone) She really likes her Hazel Hamster food though.
Honestly, I am going to go the easy route and copy your feed routine for the new girl Drkmck.
What is Muesli?
Chicky also didn't bite me but oh well.
The new lil miss made sure I was aware that she did not like this handling business one bit. I put on gloves and she took that as a sign to bite more and harder.
I wish there were breeders/rescues around here but sadly the only option is the petstore or craigslist. (almost all my other animals are rescues)

It is oatmeal with added fruit and nuts. I love it for myself and I share with my sister and the hams. But they get theirs uncooked and I remove the fruit from the dwarfies share. I bought a case of it on Amazon

Re: Doesn't have a name yet
Hi! I would suggest you pick out a little bit of the fruit bits that are in the Higgins Sunburst because they can get a bit overwhelming for a dwarf, but this is entirely up to you. I dont personally because well I mix it with my other foods like Hazel Hamster and since you said that you have other foods - why not just continue using the foods you already have?
I know that though, Higgins can have som pretty large and obvious fruit bits like shredded coconut and I'd break those in half for your dwarfie. That sounds resonable right? Break a piece of shredded pea or carrot in half along with a piece of coconut and give it to your other hamster to split amongst themselves, so that way it doesnt become overwhelming.
Not go through the entire dang mix, but just pick out a piece when its obvious. Oxbow is a great block to be adding in, so I wouldnt recommend you take that away. I was thinking of taking them all off of Higgins & Hazel all together because of some rumors, but then again later on I got over it and realized its a fine mix.
I just dont ever recommend giving any of your dwarves any kind of fruit, not even if its low in sugars. Its just not resonable to risk it. Maybe a nail sized piece but why would you anyway? Its like getting them on an addiction thats unhealthy and thats not really fair...
But I've only had my Syrian since Janurary 27th... I have yet to give him fruits. -Shame on me- I need to give him a piece of Banana! Though he loves coconut chips in his higgins sunburst, and he loves the Banana chips as well. I need to give him things like Fresh banana and Strawberries that I'm aware. ^_^"
I had some scrambled egg this morning for breakfast, and my hamsters loved sharing it - I just asked my mom to set aside some without the cheese and hot sauce.

Re: Doesn't have a name yet
I have always chosen a theme and named my pets after that theme. For example herb theme, thyme, rosmary, basil, chervil. I have always loved the moles of Dunctan wood here is a link to a list of names from the book. The Book of Silence Character List - WilliamHorwood.net. My friend loved the Narnia books and named some ofher small furries after the characters like Tumnus. Just choose character names from your favourite books, movies, plants foods ect........ the options are endless.
