Breeding Winter White Question (genetics)
Hello Guys,
im confuse because my friend bred
winter white (normal) x winter white (normal)
the outcome is some winter white normal and sapphire
and a Blue Argente
is it possible that the parent is carrying hybrid genes?

Re: Breeding Winter White Question (genetics)
If you have any red eyed pups in the litter then both parents are hybrids somewhere along the line as there are no red eyed winter whites.
All pups are hybrid in this case as the parents are. The argente gene is recessive so the blue argente must have got one argente gene from each parent so it is showing up. You cannot breed hybrid out. Once it is there it is there in the line forever.
Both parents were also carrying sapphire as it is also recessive so the sapphire pups will have got one sapphire gene from each parent hence they are sapphire.

Re: Breeding Winter White Question (genetics)
Winter Whites have been hybridised with Campbells hamsters. Unless the WW are from a registered NHC breeder it is highly likely that they have been hybridised at some point in their family tree. If the hamsters were from a pet shop then they will be hybrids and shouldn't really be bred from.
Hybrids can have health problems such as being prone to diabetes and neurological issues. There is also the question of whether it is ethical to support the breeding of hybrids rather than trying to breed the pure species

Re: Breeding Winter White Question (genetics)
There are on;y 3 natural mutations in Winter whites - the normal (wild type colour), Sapphire and Pearl.
A hybrid has combined genes from Campbells and Winter white species. Because of this the can look more like either type however sometimes an animal gets a genetic make up which produces a hamster which has a colour of pattern never seen in the pure version.
The blue argente I think will have the Argente genes from the Campbells and the Sapphire genes from the Winter white giving the red eyed, blue grey hamster your friend has.
Because it has shown up in this hamster means that the parents and the other pups will have the same genome so are hybids but it just is not showing up in them.

Re: Breeding Winter White Question (genetics)
The colour means that the hamsters have argente and opal campbells in there history meaning they are hybrids.
There is also marbled winter whites
