Default My Winter White?

I was wondering if my hamster is a full winter white or a hybrid? I got him at PetSmart, I work there. I think he started to change white but stopped. Its not really cold here, as I'm still wearing shorts and flip flops. LOL

I have not named him yet, but he is really nice. And have not bitten me yet. Before I started working at Petsmart I thought all dwarf hamsters where mean. B/c all of the ones I've ever had, where every mean and could not be held. Trying to get him to take food out of my hand but so far he does not like any treats I try and give him.

Thanks,

Hello Tibbi,

Any Dwarf hamster brought from a pet shop will be a hybrid. The only way to get a pure Winter White or Campbell's hamster is to buy one from a National Hamster Council Breeder.

Being a Hybrid you need to feed him a sugar free diet as Hybrid Hamsters are prone to Diabates.

Having said all of that he is cute xxx

Not 'EVERY' hamster you get from a shop is hybrid.

I know a breeder that sells his to pet shops

But they are smaller petshops.

he is very cute though xx

If he got his hammy's from a NHC breeder at a hamster show & has not introduced any pet shop dwarfs into his breeding then he does breed pure WW or C

But unless you know that then they are classed as Hybrids.

I agree with Silver, as long as you don't want to show then it doesn't really matter but if you want a pure ww ou need to go to a breeder. He is very very cute though and iBook forward to seeing more photos!

I can't really say but the original poster is American as this store is a large American Pet store chain.
Your hammy is lovely but still very young. I would doubt they keep the lines separate in America but couldn't be sure. If there were any 'non WW colour' babies in the tank you hammy is most likely a hybrid.
Never the less he is GORGEOUS

Thanks, I would like to get another one full WW. But can't find any breeders close to me. I can't afford to pay shipping. We do have a smaller local pet store here. I'll try and give them a call. But that pet store does not have a good rep.
