Yes I too have had a hammie dangling off my thumb before and it did hurt and I did shriek. I though I would never get him off. He smelt another male and I had made the mistake of not washing my hands so he thought he was biting a rival male syrian. Does he bite only near the cage or outside too? They probably sense your understandable nervousness now. Try and not present a finger or anything they can get a grip on. Use a fist and let them smell it first. If they only bite near the cage they may have cage aggression so herd them into a box or ball and take them well away from the cage on to a bed before handling. I don't think they will be biting each other as they will have an established hierarchy now and you would see bite marks.
