Default Wheels for Robo hamsters

Hi everyone After bringing our rusian dwarf home earlier this month my niece really took a liking to him and has been asking none stop for a hamster of her own. My sister finally agreed on the condition that it would live with me, which is honesty fine with me We've ordered a bin to make into a cage and its already arived were just waiting for a few more bits that we've ordered to arive. The one thing I'm having trouble finding though is a suitable sized wheel, I feel like they're either all too big or too small. I have a spare 21cm trixie wheel that I used briefly for Pascal but i'm worried that a robo hamster might have trouble turning it since theyre so small. What wheels do you use for your robos? Thank you.

My Robo's favourite wheel is the 28cm Trixie wheel in the hamster playground. In his tank he has the 21cm Trixie wheel, same as my other foster Robo.

The 9in Silent Runner would be my preferred option.

Just because they are tiny doesn't mean that they need very small wheels. I used to think that and bought 7in wheels until the Robos showed me otherwise.

I use the silent runner 9 inch wheel for my robo.
It is amazing how big a wheel they can use. Some robos use the 30cm/12 inch wheels very easily.
Often robos get easily flung out of the smaller wheels, but I and many others have found if you have a bigger wheel, this stops happening and is safer for the hamster.
Hope this helps

Ah! - that's interesting! I also thought smaller hamster = smaller wheel, and our Robo does quite often get flung out of her wheel. I will try her with a bigger one.
Thanks for this, Luna.

They can fly out of larger wheels when they're not used to them, but once they're used to a wheel they don't do that It needs to be at least 6 to 7" but I also use an 8 or 9" wheel for our robo. Just make sure there's plenty of soft substrate around the wheel area in case he flies out at first!

I prefer them screwed to the bars so they're stable, rather than sat on the substrate. I have the 9" open rodipet one which screws to the bars, but it's a bit expensive. And there are plenty of other options. This one actually has a height adjustable stand and can fit onto a pedestal which sits under the substrate to keep it stable. But I ended up using it just screwed to the bars instead of on the stand (the stand and pedestal are a good option for a tank style cage though). It's a bit of a luxury wheel - cork lined for their feet, silent and spins well. No rim so easy to get in and out (which doesn't really matter till they're older).

Depends on your set up

But there are plenty of other 8" or 9" wheels. There's a video of a robo running in that 9" wheel on the top link That's how they run in it when they're used to it - ie stay at the bottom and stop easily. Initially they run so fast they go right round the top! With centrifugal force. But they can do that in any wheel till they get used to it.

If you have space in the cage for both, they love a 6-7" flying saucer wheel as well. But the upright wheel takes priority so if there's not room for both, just stick with the upright wheel. Our last robo had both and used both of them.
