Exclamation Roborovskiís fought, but are fine now?

Hello! around 3 weeks ago i purchased two roborovski males, raised together. Iíve gotten them a large cage and double of everything to reduce chances of fighting. For the most part, theyíve been fine, but last night i found one had bitten the other hard enough to draw blood while i was asleep. I immediately separated them to get a better look at the hurt one, who wasnít limping at all and was overall fine other than the bite (thankfully). I put him back in the cage with the other one, though, and they immediately sat next to each other and fell asleep, completely comfortable with each other and not skittish in the slightest. iím not sure if this was a one time thing or if i leave them itíll keep happening? it has nearly been a day since it happened and no more fighting has happened since. any advice?? should i separate them now permanently or leave them and see if it happens again??

Hello,

You've only had them 3 weeks and already there has been a bad injury.

Unfortunately, keeping two robos together without bulling or injury or worse is hard.

I'd separate now rather than wait for the next, inevitable injury

Hi and welcome to HC!

My one and only advice is to separate them immediately.
Hamsters are territorial and will fight to the death.

I'm surprised that you put your Robos back together having seen what can happen. You're more than likely to end up with badly injured hamsters and a huge vet bill or worse if you keep them together.

Don't worry about them getting lonely or missing each other because they won't.

Agree with separating them now permanently. Once it has been a fight that has drawn blood, the next fight could be to the death (or serious maiming). Especially as they get older and their hormones kick in and they get more territorial. It’s not worth the risk and can be very distressing. If one did get killed it’s likely the other one would start to eat him (which is their instinct to dispose of a dead animal in the cage). People have been very emotionally affected by this kind of thing to the point they could no longer relate to the remaining hamster.

Is one of them bigger than the other? It can be a build up to a fight where one has been hogging the food and basically bullying in that way - or dominating.

There may be other views. I believe some experienced breeders do try ways of keeping them together but I think you should separate them and let them have their own cage each. It’s something you always need to be prepared for with a pair.

I rescue and rehome Robos sometimes and have actually come across this. A couple housed two Robos together and when they cleaned their cage one was missing but they found a bit of fur etc. They put the remaining Robo up for sale in the small ads because of this. They didn't advertise this fact but told me.

I rehomed the Robo and told the lady what had happened but like me, she sympathised with the Robos and blamed the humans who allowed this to happen in the first place.

Dont worry they will be fine on their own.

I had 2 sisters that fell out and a group of three (from gumtree) who also fell out. They were all perfectly hapoy as singles after the initial adustment to their new set ups.

Talking Re: Roborovskiís fought, but are fine now?

Hello again!

Just wanted to say thank you for all the advice. I separated them both as soon as I could and they are both super happy on their own and way more confident in their own spaces. The one who was bitten, Hugo, is recovering super well and thereís nearly no sign that he was bitten in the first place now! They are also socialising with me a lot more since they donít have to worry about each other now so again, thank you all so much!

Glad it's turned out alright. Did you manage to find space for another cage!
