Haha, they certainly have their ways of telling us what they want.

I've never had much luck with hand taming inside their habitats and always take the hamsters out on neutral ground. Our first Robo Gordon came onto my hand briefly to eat seeeds but it took him three months to pluck up the courage. I couldn't sit in the same position for a long time nowadays because i'd seize up i expect.

You could try taming in a playpen but it takes time for a Robo to get comfortable in new surroundings and they do hide quite a bit at first. Monty runs through tubes while out and sniffs around a lot but Monty being Monty he first of all sits and eats. Took a while for him to become so relaxed when out of his HH. He is easier to scoop up now as well. I put him under my top for a bit so he gets used to my smell and let him go from hand to hand, stroke him etc before i let him run off to the playground.

Personally, i think the only way to tame a Robo is by handling them but the degree of tameness depends on the Robo. A lot of people would probably disagree with that and say wait until the Robo comes to you. Trouble is that they only live for about two years.

Thanks Ria. Our last Robo was only out of the cage a couple of times - could hold him quite easily once out (and he ran up my trouser leg lol ). I tried a taming box with him first but he hated it - the playpen was better. Pip seems like he will be much easier u to o get out of the cage as a bit braver. Our previous one was completely terrified and virtually impossible to get him out without removing everything from the cage. Latterly though he would walk into a snooze cube. He was quite a lot older by then.

So no idea whether Pip will become fully hand tame yet - but they are fast so yes a playpen probably best - no way I could make the room Robo proof. He doesn’t seem scared of me though - comes right up to the bars and stares me in the face. Just not keen on hands (although most hamsters don’t like a hand in the cage).

I bought one of those foldaway kiddies ball pits from Sainsbury's for 6. Monty looked ever so grumpy when i put him in it but likes the hall playground.

The fact that Pip stares at you at the bars sounds very promising because most Robos are too shy for that.

Yes I think so. I do think he’s wanting to get out. And the fact that he chucks food to get our attention! I have the wood playpen that Zooplus used to sell - slots together and a good size. Really like it. Before that I had a diy one with large sheets of Coroplast held together with bulldog clips. Wasn’t as secure though.

Oh yes! I forgot about your nice Zooplus playpen but now remember photos with Newt in it.

Yes got it for Newt I think. All the hamsters have been in it since. It’s holding up well - fingers crossed!

I thought Pip had escaped the other night. I’ve had a difficult week as my Father passed away last weekend.

I didn’t close the cage door properly one night. I found it just pushed to the following night with quite a large gap down the side. I thought Pip had been quiet - he’s normally making a racket mid evening and on his wheel. So I checked inside his house and rummaged around the cage and no sign of him. More worry and anxiety. So I set up a bucket trap that night and nothing in it next day. On top of everything else it felt like a mammoth task to try and find him. He is so tiny he could have got into any room and certainly under the door into the kitchen. So I thought I’d need a bucket trap and water dish in every room. But we had heard no noises anywhere so I was quite worried.

Before doing all that I thought I’d try going in each room and calling his name and listening to see if I could hear any noises. Nothing. Came back in the living room and there was Pip at the cage bars looking out at me. He clearly recognises his name then. So he was in the cage the whole time but strange he went awol for two evenings. I was so happy to see him and chatted to him and I’m sure he listened.

So drama over. There is no way he could have escaped and gone back to the cage as it’s on the top shelf of a stand - quite a drop to the floor (which is why there’s a large floor cushion there).

I am making a conscious thing of double checking the cage before going to bed. Life has to go on and hamsters still need to be looked after.

I'm very sorry to hear about your father, Serendipity.

Pip must like his lovely home so much that he wouldn't want to leave it.
He seems very responsive to you or your voice considering that you haven't had him for that long.

Sorry to hear about your father, but very happy for you that Pip was safe and sound all along. I imagine you could have done without that perceived stress though.
