Default 30 gallon?

Hi all, I am getting a single robo hamster and I have done quite a bit of research. I understand they require a minimum of 450 sq inches of floor space. I live in a small house. The space I have will fit a 30 gallon aquarium which is 432 sq inches of floor space. Can I make this work? Could I add a platform? The hamster will have a playpen and exercised often. She has an 8 inch wheel as well.

Thanks for your feedback. I've tried to find a 40 gallon long but they are really hard to find where I live. And the space is tight!

Hi Betty! I hope you enjoy your new hamster that is so exciting! Unfortunately adding a platform actually does not increase running area I know I wish it did too! My best advice would be to get a bin cage. There are tons of tutorials online about how to make them but they're cheaper and you can get really big ones too!!

Good Luck!!

Betty, I don't know if you already have your robo, but a lot of them don't like to come out for free roam/out of cage time. It does all depend on the robo. 450sq inches is classed as the very bare minimum and I know people often quote a 40 gallon tank as the bare minimum. Just because something is classed as bare minimum, it doesn't always mean this is what is best for an animal so that it can thrive.

These days it is thought (through research and observing hamster behaviour) that something like 100x50 cm is the minimum for a hamster to thrive. It is also often quoted that 80x 50cm is a good size to start with for robos. Personally, I wouldn't go smaller than this.

Is there anyway you can change your room around to make more space for a larger sized cage?
