Default My first Foster Hamster

Hello all,

Looks like I am taking in my first foster hamster, a little robo. Arriving tonight.

I need to keep it until my friend can get a proper sized cage for her.

I have told my friend minimum sized cage she needs is 80x 50. There seems to be such a shortage of cages at the moment, but I think she wants to go with a non-barred cage anyway.

Does anyone know what the bar spacing is on this zoo zone critter cage is, I have looked everywhere but can't find it. I have a feeling it is going to be big spaces, but do you think we could mesh it?

Or point me in the direction of similar enclosure, I have a feeling tanks will be out of my friends price range.

That's the Zoozone 2 i think which would be great for a Robo. I have meshed a couple of those for the rescue to keep dwarfs in. I don't know the bar spacing but it would definitely need meshing.
There are a lot of good second hand cages on Gumtree just now or have a look at second hand aquariums. In fact, i picked up one of those Zoozone 2 cages for £10, just needed a good clean.

Don't forget to post a photo of your foster hamster please.

Thanks Ria, sadly there never seems to be any good 2nd hand hamster cages advertised where I live.
I think I have only ever seen 1 or 2 in all the time I have been looking. Having said that, there is a wooden paw hut one for sale at the moment but they still want near asking price for it, although in all fairness it is new. I just don't really want to recommend a wooden cage to my friend until we know what the hamster is like.

Don't worry I will post pics if i can get some

The zoozone would be. a good size but I’m pretty sure it would have to be meshed.
If you’re friend isn’t completely against a barred cage the savic midkey 2xl is still available on amazon & that would be a great cage fora robo, bit expensive though.

Looking forward to meeting your little foster friend if you can get some photos!

I have seen the Zoozone large for sale at my local Jolleys petstore and just checked their website.

Its available click & collect and providing you have a Jolleys near you, it may work out cheaper than have it delivered.

I got my zoozone 2 many many moons ago for £15 ebay. If memory serves I meshed the top for my syrian as it was a rabbit/guinea pig cage (awful I know). It was a cood cage, very big, was bit heavy for me though and need to make a water bottle solution for it

A water bottle solution is easy for a dwarf with a mini bottle in a small soft drinks bottle weighed down with marbles or pebbles.

Thanks everyone, you are killing me with your bargains

Is the zoozone the cheapest of that type of cage?

She has cats and they obviously will not be allowed in the same room as the hamster but she wants to be extra cautious so if she got that cage and meshed the lid it should be cat proof. This is why barred cages are out.

Oh I had only recently heard of Jolleys, the nearest one is 40mins drive away, so prob not worth it as can get for £3 more online with free delivery.

I have just done the longest email for my friend with cheap, middle and expensive options for cages, wheels, food, bedding etc. i've got loads of bits and bobs she can have from me if she wants and said can use recycling for lots of things.

Yes, i think the Zoozone 2 is good value at around £50/55.

The Maxi Duna Multy is similar but more expensive and i can't think of another cage in that style.
