Some of my Roborovski
Hi, time to introduce the smallest members of my hamstery
I've got agouti (normal), pied (recessive) and husky here at the moment but will have some other colours over from the continent next year all being well.
In the thumbnails below there is Evie (normal), Frigg (husky) and Moneypenny (pied). I really need to take some more robo pics!
My guys are all pets, first and foremost, and show hamsters where possible. They also come to educational displays where they show off their robo ways to members of the public. I generally use the boys who seem to be a bit calmer overall.
I don't use big cages for mine, I prefer cages like the mini duna or tubs that are similar in size as I've found they are tamer, less stressed and breed easier in these.
Also in the thumbnails I've included some previous litter pics as everyone loves a cute baby robo photo!

They are all so cute! I wouldn't show them to the public, that would be a very scary experience for a robo, I would imagine

Not at all. It's no different to taking them to a show and they have all taken the attention very well. Of course we don't let the public take hold of the hamster as we don't want to be losing any on the floor! My guys are used to a lot of handling, children in the house and noise which all helps I think.

Re: Some of my Roborovski
That's good then. My robos would get super scared being around anyone but me. They are always sleeping when friends/family come over. I don't wake them up to visit.

Re: Some of my Roborovski
It's all down to what your own hamsters are used to. Youngsters are brought into the main room from 3 weeks old to start getting more used to busy household noises. It means they are better able to cope with life in a family home as well as showing. At a show you have the public looking at show pens, they are handled by the judge (a stranger) and have to sit on a judging grid so it's important they get to know early on that this is all fine
For a pet robo that doesn't do this type of thing of course, they likely won't encounter this sort of scenario although it does make them much more manageable if they ever need to see a vet.

Re: Some of my Roborovski
They are so so adorable. Gives me hope that I may be able to cuddle with Scamp my robo hehe
Somewhat slightly off topic and on the other side of scale where animals are concerned but I have horses and almost 3 years ago to the day, we bought Ollie, a Clydesdale cross (big chunky boy) who had basically lived most of his life on a livery yard. He was incredibly sociable with other horses, people and dogs and sound on the road with cars etc. He was used for riding lessons and young children frequently rode him. He was basically what we call "bomb proof" but when we moved him to ours, he became a completely different horse. He was skittish and very unpredictable just with us being in the field to the point that I was the only one brave enough to do the poop scooping as no one trusted that they wouldn't be trampled by him. Long story short...it turned out he was petrified of the cows and sheep in the neighbouring field!! He'd never been exposed to them at the livery; the more of our environment he was exposed to, the more of his skittish behaviour came to the fore. He was "bombproof" in his old environment because he was 100% at ease with his surroundings. I went to see him at a show before we bought him and he was the most laid back horse you'd ever encounter, even with all the hustle and bustle that comes with the territory. If I hadn't have seen him and ridden him at the livery, I would have never believed someone if they had've told me he was so laid back. He's now back to his old self and I use him for classes and demonstrations for bonding and eliminating fear - he even grazes in a field with our "pet" sheep, One-Eyed-Wally
Not sure where I was going with that story lol but when I read this post it made me think of Olls and I guess, if that's how your robos have been reared and it's all they know, it's not surprising they are fine with all of that activity. Still hard for me to imagine because my new robo bolts for cover at the sight of his own shadow lol but yours give me hope

Re: Some of my Roborovski
I see it as no different to socialising dog puppies if you like. I already do it with my syrians as most go to families with noisy kids, hoovers, possibly dogs etc so if they are used to some of that already it means they experience less stress settling into a new home.
Going on your story there, most of my rescue hamsters can't do an education event and I don't push it for them. They've largely had limited to almost no handling before coming to me, especially the robos, and are scared of everything.
My own robos will still initially run away, I don't think they can help it as a species and I like to think a healthy robo would do that. But yes, early handling and socialisation def do make a difference. Keep working on your Scamp, little and often is the key. And if you are calm about it, he'll take his cue from you and realise no one is out to eat him
That moment when your robo stops running and sits, looks about and then washes in your hand is a priceless moment

Re: Some of my Roborovski
I can do. I've been looking at doing some instruction type videos that I'd like to share and also adding articles to my website. I'd be happy to share those here
