Wow I have certainly learned a lot now! I probably will buy a pen as I already love showing and dont think I can resist staying away from entering main class more that just once so it works out cheaper in the long run. Syrian show pens with wood pellet substrate for robos right? By the way, why do they use the Syrian pens for robos?

Actually I have been told that if the judge likes one in particular they make a little note along the lines of JP - judges pocket I guess that can really help if when they tally the scores some have the same

Hi Guys,

Some posts made on this thread have been removed due to them being off topic and also due to the unfriendly manner in which they have been written. This is not what we expect from our members here, so we would like all members to remind themselves of the rules and guidelines on posting. Please keep your posts friendly guys

I would like to add my own experiences of showing robos here as i think it might help to clear up a few problems.

With regards to which robo colours can actually be entered in to shows, it really does depend on the actual Show, Judge and Secretary.!!

According the NHC Handbook (which can be downloaded here: NHC Handbook - National Hamster Council ) the Non Standard class is for colours and varieties for which no standard exists.

You might think this is a staight forward explanation but the problem is that this is interpreted by different judges to mean different things! Some judges interpret the rules as saying that only colours which are non standard but have also been officially recognised by the NHC can be entered in non standard.

Other judges interpret the rules differently and see it as any other colour apart from Agouti (Robos) are all non standard and can be entered in to non standard.

It really does depend on the judge on the day and what mood they are in!! I have entered Pied, White, Caramel and Husky robos at some of the shows i have been to and at some shows the same judge has decided to disqualify some of them as they have not been officially recognised, but judge them at other shows!

Some judges have judged them but wrote a little note on the pen label saying they shouldnt really be there.

Some judges dont mind them being there at all!

I think it also depends on how each person writes their show entries too. Personally i write out all of the class numbers and that's it. Other people will write down the hamster's species, sex, colour etc. and then the classes - giving the secretary an opportunity to not let them be entered - and again this depends on the secretary and their view of the rules!

It is all very much dependant on the circumstances of the day!

Currently, there are three robos colours (in addition to Agouti) that have been officially recognised by the NHC and are therefore officially 'allowed' in the Non - Standard class. These are: Brown Locus (aka Red Eyed / Caramel), Husky (Recessive White Faced) and Pied (Mottled).

Hope this helps!

Thank you Tammy, it goes to show that as with many things, rules are written, but people's interpretation is often subjective.

I'm glad you managed to sneak my beautiful white boys in at least once, I'm sure soon enough they'll be welcomed in all shows for non standard

Hi Guys,
yes, they have a few different names, depending on where you come from i suppose, but nobody really know what the colour is due to it being different from alot of the genes already around in other hamsters.

It isnt Rust or Cinnamon, even though it has been called this. The ones i have are born with red eyes - which i have proof of, but apparently some other countries have robos that are the same colour but are born with black eyes. The ones i have definitely are born with red eyes which very quickly (within a few days) turn black, and by the time they are adults it is very difficult to see that they are not black.

I have proposed that this new colour be called Caramel as the ones i have do look very much this colour, but due to the fact that no many people have seen the colour, and also that they look very different in the fur than in photos, the NHC have decided to hold fire on giving this gene an actual name at the moment, and have just called it 'Brown Locus' so that it could be offically recognised. Since this was done i have shown the colour in the fur to a few people that do actually agree with my name for it, so we will have to see

I very recently imported three more 'Caramels' from Czech, so will hopefully get photos of them soon too.

Thank you, Tammy!

On those photos, are all of the hams Caramel colored or some are something else? Looked like a few of the bunch are almost yellow-caramel and overall lighter, and some others are darker and closer to agouti. I couldn't tell if it was just the play of light and shadow.

Some are Agouti, some are Caramel, but to be honest they are not the best pics i have of them - these were taken over a year ago now! I really need to get some new photos of them all.
but like i said, the camera really doesnt show their true colour very well - all of the Caramels on those photos are very similar in shade.
The main difference between the Agoutis and the Caramels are the ears, so look for that, lol
