Default I'm scared to take him out the cage

I have a dwarf hamster. He is about 6 months old now. He is in a cage 100cm by 50cm with deep carefresh bedding, he has lots of toys, flying saucer and an 8 inch trixie wheel, he gets fresh food and water every day, I feed him little pieces of apple and cucumber and also forage. I pet him while he is into the cage and talk to him, and watch him in the cage, but I haven't been taking him out of the cage recently. I used to take him out and let him run around a playpen, but he just climbed out. A few times I have had him out on the bed but I am always panicking I lose him as he runs very fast and if he managed to slip down the side of the bed or something he might get hurt or I might never find him. I feel like I'm not going to be able to get the same bond with my hamster though. Maybe I should try the play pen again, it is a fun game he just climbs out and I put him back in again...

I'm worried I'm being cruel by not letting him out the cage but I'm terrified of something happening to him. I have lots of stuff all over my room so it would be very easy to lose him.

what I do with my hamsters, is close my bedroom, bathroom, and closet doors and block off any majorly crowded areas and set up a lot of toys. I do this even with my teeny robo hamsters, despite them really not being tame at all. I got nervous the 1st few times, but I always end up finding them. even the few times where it took me a good 10 minutes to find them, I always did because there was nowhere else for them to go.
also, with 2 of my hamsters, they come running to me when I pat the floor. it sounds like you have a great bond with your hamster so he might do that also
if you really don't feel comfortable, maybe you can get one of those really big play pens, where you can sit in with him? I don't know which type you have, so maybe you have one that size already, but they're much harder to escape because they're so tall.
some ppl also set up a run in their bathtub, or they let their hamster run around in a kiddy pool.
hope this was helpful, good luck!!

It sounds like you have the wrong type of playpen and you need to get one he can't climb out off.

Do you have a hall or landing?
I use the upstairs landing by closing all the doors, jam towels under doors with gaps and block off the stairs with a board. Then put a blanket and floor toys down.

A bed can be risky because hamsters are fast and best avoided.

You need to feel confident that he is safe when out of his cage so you enjoy the experience as well.
I think it's just a matter of finding or creating a suitable environment.

Would you please send us a picture of your playpen? I'm just curious, because I can't imagine how a hamster would escape my playpen, since it has a big 30cm wall, if that makes any sense and when I checked for playpens all of the playpens had high walls. You might want to get a new playpen to start a taming process.

When you've tamed your hamster and he'll trust you, you can put him on bed, but always be next to it and make sure nothing goes wrong. The most important thing is that your hamster would start loving you and come to you when you say it's name (that's what Bogie did). Don't be scared. It'll all go well, just keep your hands close to the hamster and don't leave him alone.
My hamster never fell down from anywhere. If I was able to do it so are you.

Bathtub is a great idea! For taming for now and some out of cage time. If you have one. It sounds like one of those playpens with bars that is quite low - is that right? I would do some bathtub taming and then think about either hamster proofing an area of a room or thinking about a different playpen. It can be tricky though as some playpens are not cheap and some are cheaper but take up too much space to store. It can be easier to just to hamsterproof a room.

Hi everyone thanks for your replies. Above is a link to the playpen I have. He can easily climb the side. Could anybody recommend a better playpen? I have a large hall I could take him into. I just have a small room and it's not very tidy, due to lack of space I have stuff everywhere and could easily lose him in here.

I know of a good easy wood playpen that is smaller than the excellent one cloudy linked, but it's expensive at about £50! Everything has gone up so much. I have a similar one. It's easy to take apart and fold away.

But actually your hallway sounds good. If you can close doors etc. I would check for gaps under doors though.

I have the Eugad playpen - link in the description below the video (quite a few people use this) crazy female syrians may try to dig their way out but works for some - if you use the zip ties rather than the black discs to hold it together there are less gaps, also can be folded away then and just need two discs to hold it together and then undo if you want to fold away. Not heard of a hamster being able to climb up them

Hi everyone. Sorry for the late reply. I have started just letting him run around on my bed (after making sure the area was safe, blocked off anywhere he might fall down etc). It has really helped our bond as he enjoys climbing on me and lets me pet him. The trouble is whereas he used to always try to escape his pen, now he always tries to go to the places I don't want him to go. He gets quite determined and sometimes I let him explore a bit more if it's safe and I'm watching closely (at the end of my bed is a pile of clothes and blankets and stuff) but yeah it is like he is always trying to escape. Maybe it's just in his nature to want to explore more? Maybe I should get more toys. I do have a maze which I hide treats in for him, but more toys would probably keep him interested for longer.
