Default Help - Dwarf Hamsters' Gender Identification

Hi All,

My dwarf Hamster recently (4 weeks ago) had three babies. I'm unable to identify their gender, so as to keep them in a separate housing. I've seen a lot of posts and YouTube videos on this but still I'm not able to ascertain their gender.I recently contacted Erin the YouTuber, she suggested to raise a query here. Can someone please help me to identify them? I've attached few pictures of them.

P.S - As per my knowledge and understanding I believe the White is a female, whereas Black 1 and Black two are males.

Thank you in advance. 😊

I hope these little hamsters will go to lovely forever homes. They are very cute.

They are very cute indeed. I hope they find their forever homes and are so well looked after - they deserve nothing less x

I don't want to commit 100% to this but I think that the hamsters in photos 1 and 3 are potentially female. It looks like the hamster in photo 2 is maybe male.

I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Hey don't get me wrong... I was just tagging my post as useless. Not you guys.

No, Erin couldn't identify.

I can and am taking care of these hamsters including it's parents (forever homes) . That's no problem for me,the COVID-19 situation is. Can't buy stuffs for them at the moment.

I'm glad you tried, and I know it's tough... Thank you. Two three people who did identify had different opinions. Lol, I'm not sure what will i do 😅

Was this an accidental litter because the parents were wrongly sexed?

Personally, i'd house them separately to ensure no further litters. I read that hamsters are able to reproduce from as young as four weeks old.

Sorry that i can't be more helpful. I have four hamsters living in their own cages and have no experience in or intention of ever breeding hamsters.

What type of hamster supplies are you not able to get at the moment?

I'm really sorry that you're in this situation viper88. Determining the sex of dwarf hamsters is not at all easy. Over time I've owned five and got the sex wrong with three of them.

I'm concerned that you are unable to get the things required for them due to this covid-19 situation. As Ria P said, what is it that you cannot get? Maybe we can provide suggestions on alternatives? Their wellbeing is (to my mind at least) just as important as a person's.

Yes, it was accidental alright. Actually, I had asked the pet store owner to give me two male dwarfs. I'm sure he himself didn't know how to identify the sexes. So now I'm blessed with three more lol. That's not a problem really.

Like their food, bedding and especially cages /enclosures. Most pet stores here are just selling Dog/cat and bird food. Nothing for hamsters or Guinea Pigs. I've requested them to get hold of some bedding and food for them. Let's see, but till that time i thought if only I could identify them. But now the situation is, even if I do identify them, I don't have enough materials to even build a cage.

Thank you for the concern Vierville, really appreciate it. The problem is the COVID19 situation else I could've at least given few of them to my friends to adopt. I'm not sure if you'll be able to help as I live in India. Most pet owners here aren't familiar or well educated on keeping small animals as pets. I had a white mouse (name was Rex) with me before these guys, lived well over two year and died of old age. These two I actually bought because they were kept in horrendous condition (outside the store in blazing sun and in a fish bowl). I took the decision to buy them immediately. This was 2 weeks before the Lockdown was implemented in India. So yeah... I don't consider my situation as that I'm stuck with these cuties but only my inability to do things for them. Couldn't even buy wheels for them. They are always bored. But very active otherwise.
