I have now realised I can get a detolf by the side of my son's bed if I need it. Would a dwarf hybrid need to have mesh on top to stop him getting out of is it safe to leave it with out one. With frost my snow elderly roborvoski I done need one but is he likely to climb. I am thinking on having one end deeper with carefresh for him to burrow into and the other shallow carefreshwith a wooden house, a wheel, sand, water bottle and possibly a wooden bridge and wooden see saw, would I need anything else for him or are some of these things not a good plaything for a dwarf hybrid? I may also get a hay Or paper tunnel if room.thanks

The plastic tubes by Kaytee or Critter Trails are fine. My hammies love them, run through them often. If you can get a plastic bin, large one, they are good cheap cages. About 110 qt, 640 sq ft is good. Get a good quality food, not just little seeds. Hammies need proteinlike mealworms, also try tiny pieces of fresh veges, brocilli, cucumber, celery, lettuce, ect.

I didn't realise bin cages where so big. I do feed him mealworns(and now shrimp) which he seems to enjoy but have been lacking in the veg side. Can he have red pepper as I have some of that and how often should he have it? Thanks

Our dwarf hybrid was a little nippy in the beginning. I think over time
yours will be more tame. Take it slow and go at his pace and be very patient. Ours doesn’t like being handled for very long but she will tolerate it because treats are
coming

To add to the unanswered questions on this thread/some advice:

If you go with a detolf, you must use a lid. The detolf is very shallow (only 14” tall), which most hamsters can climb out of with a little cleverness, especially if you pile up the bedding on one end.

Other cages options like bins are great if they’re available to you, but I hear in Europe good bins are harder to come by. Checking out ZooPlus May be worth a shot; they have some great barred cages like the Alaska and the Barney that would definitely work for a dwarf. Granted, they’re not as large as the detolf, but they’re a lot more sturdy and don’t require modification.

Either way, be sure you fill the cage so your hamster feels secure. There should only be enough space for your hamster to weave around each toy; large open spaces are not recommended, especially for new hamsters. DIY is a great option; YouTube is full of ideas.

The 110qt bin is actually only 450sq in. The dimensions listed are the top dimensions and, since most bins slope down to the bottom (including this bin), the actual dimensions can be up to 300sq in smaller than listed in some cases!

For red pepper, this depends on the type— hot peppers should never be fed whatsoever as hamsters can’t tolerate spiciness, but red bell pepper can be fed every 1-3 days. A 1cmx1cm chunk is a good size
