Questions
Hi all
I got my first dwarf hamster last week and he seems content. Just 2 a few small things I would like help with please:
1. He flatly rejects the paper bedding. I left some in the cage all week and it's still in the same place! Is this normal or have I just got a crazy one lol.
2. He takes food from my fingers when I hold it. When I have the food cupped in my hands he bites. I tried to use a glove and you'd have thought I was an attacker or food the way he was going (I calmly moved my hand away and placed the treats down). Is it too early to say or will he be a look but don't touch? If so, I could look at him all night as he's certainly amusing!
3. I scatter feed, but he doesn't hoard it. Whenever he is hungry during the day he comes out and forages for it. I am assuming this is fine but again, seems weird!
4. I was thinking of getting a robo. Is there a 'safe' distance between the 2 cages that I'll have to keep? I was planning on putting them in the same room but not if it will stress them.
Any help would be appreciated!

Re: Questions
Congrats on your new little one!
What paper bedding do you mean? Is it toilet tissue? Plain white shredded up toilet tissue is usually a favourite with most hams but he may still be settling in so give it some time.
I would ditch the gloves tbh, I did try gloves once with a ham that never bites just out of interest to see what would happen & he immediately attacked them!
How big is your cage? If it's on the small side they can find hands a bit threatening & that may cause them to bite or could it just be exploratory nibbling? That's very common & something they tend to grow our of.
I've found some don't pouch or hoard for a little while he probably will begin to do that soon enough, I wouldn't worry about that at all.
Having more than one ham in the room is fine, I wouldn't put them too close, mine are at least a few feet apart, a bit closer would probably be ok & with two different species they probably won't take much notice of each other.

Re: Questions
I put Wilko value paper, mixed with toilet paper and kitchen towel. He looked at me earlier when I held some to him with a look that said "er, what do you expect to do with that!?".
He's in a hamster heaven, so I'm sure that's plenty big enough for him to play in. I'm not sure why he bit my finger, maybe it was a bit too soon for him. It wasn't a nibble (at least I assume it wasn't. It drew blood which I wouldn't have thought a nibble would).

Re: Questions
I would just stick with toilet paper, no idea what the wilko paper is but kitchen paper doesn't break down like toilet tissue so not as safe.
Sometimes it's hard to know why they bite when they're new & young, when you offer treats keep your hand flat & still & try leaving a trail of seeds from your finger tips to your palm so he can find food as soon as he smells it & doesn't bite just expecting the treat he can smell.
Another way is to bury your finger tips in the substrate & put a treat on your palm.
