I have a spare cage, so I put mine in that.

I used to let my little girl run around in the kitchen (after I had Hamster proofed it) she loved the freedom and the space that it gave her

You can simply put them inside a cereal bowl.

I put Hammy Bear in an empty vacuum box that I made into a DIY temp hammy cage. I put holes on the side of the box so I could put her wheel and water bottle in it and I also put holes on the top so I could hang her hanging toys and I put treats inside them so she'll be pretty occupied with her time in the box while I do her cleaning. She's fine for the end of the cleaning but not a place to leave her in :P

I have a separate, smaller cage that I put her in for the time I'm cleaning her main place.

I wouldn’t recommend using a ball at all but especially with a dwarf hamster, they can get injured in a ball & it can be stressful for them as they are trapped in there & unable to use their senses to find their way around. A playpen or large play bin with toys & a wheel is much safer & beneficial.
