Forgot to ask if you're giving him probiotics?
Always a good idea if they're on antibiotics & when they're stressed too, it can really aid recovery.

Ok thanks Cypher

I just gave him his meds but I couldn't get a good hold, tried 2 or 3 times. Going to see if vet would give him his meds next four days? It's a waste of time if I can't give him his meds correctly.

Update: I'm taking him to the vet next 4 mornings so they can give him his ivomec. Not charging me much. I'm still going to try before I bring him in tho.

So I was able to get a more secure grip on Koala this morning to get his meds in him & then I called the vet to let her know I won't need to come in this morning & their phone # has been disconnected?

What should I do if these meds don't work after the 10 days? Should I take him to another vet or just do nothing more? It seems cruel to watch him scratching constantly.

The vet said that this treatment might work but the mites might pop up again in the future with an underlying possible health problem?

If the course of treatment doesn't completely resolve the problem then you just go back for another course, sometimes it can take about three courses of treatment to get rid of them.
They are more susceptible to might problems when immunity is low for whatever reason, stress, possibly something not quite right with the diet are a couple of things that can compromise their immune system, the mites are there all the time so it's only when they a bit below par for some reason that they become overwhelmed by them & the mites actually cause a problem.

Ok, but it looks like my vet is moving an hour away. They said in a month but like I was saying I can't contact them for further help. They said they'd call in a couple weeks to see how he's doing?

If it turns out that this vet is no longer available should I take him to another vet? Pay all that money again?

It's really unfortunate that your vet is moving away but he may well need to continue with the treatment so basically yes, you will have to find another vet & take him in again.

I really hope this treatment works to kill the mites as it seems that it was a waste of money & stressing Koala by pickin him up 2x's / day. They don't appear very credible unless there is some other reason for their to be a disconnected phone # all the sudden? Very stange!

Update: tried the number again & it went to their voice mail. Apparently they forgot to pay their bill? Lol

I made a mistake & cleaned Koala's cage without long gloves. I got bit just below my elbow by one of those mites. I ran lots of hot water and bacterial soap. It hurt too, poor Koala Makes me really try to help him he must be suffering, hope meds work successfully? Ill be doing daily cage cleans this week, everythings getting scrubbed down. Koala is fine with cage cleans, he runs on the wheel & pees on places where mommy can see But the mites obviously aren't gone.

That wasn't smart To not use gloves...

Update: Just noticed that Koala peed on an area that I could test for glucose. So I used my Keto-Diastix strips and he tested high for glucose so now both Cinnamon & Koala have diabetes. I'll stop giving them seeds to start with...not a good night

I'm not buying anymore Russian hamsters ever again. I've owned 5 & Chloe is more WW, but only Chloe is healthy except for her lump by tail that hasn't bothered her. All of my Russians have had diabetes & numerous health problems. Maybe it's just me. I'm happy for everybody who own healthy Russian hamsters.
