Default Taming questions.

Hi.

Where to begin.. Emina has been with me for 5 days now, and I am in doubt how I take the taming further. She takes my treats and goes on/off my hand but with caution still.

When I got my other hamster I never did the bathtub/playpen taming, it was all within the cage. So I wouldnt call him tame as in cuddly, greets me when I get home-tame. But he is used to hands, not afraid but a bit antisocial. I can grab him/move him and he doesnt care or bite. But he does not like to be held. (I hope you understand my point here hehe) Even though I love him to bits, I really want to make an efford into taming Emina properly so she actually wants to be with me. And not just seeing me as a transporter that takes her from cage to floor

I dont have a bathtub or a playpen, but I want to get a hamsterball and a some sort of playpen to put all my extra hamster stuff in. And then take Emina to the ground, like it says on forums, guides and so on.
Hopefully during next week Ill have a setup for taming correctly..

Aaand I keep rambling on, not getting to the point, WHICH is: how do I do this? How do I know when Emina is ready to be taken out without making her scared/stressed. And when is she "tame enough" within the cage. (I mentioned she takes treats and licks/nips on my hand. Sometimes walk on it. But she is not 100% comfortable, I can see that in her movements. And sometimes she hesitate and you know how it is)

I also want to give it a try with Milo again. Maybe he can get more social with me. And general taming tips would be nice. (I have also read around the forum /internet for taming guides, but you guys opinion and experience would be lovely as well..)

Also sorry for my many posts lately. I always get alittle obsessed with questions, pictures and so on

Default Re: Taming questions.

food food food. always reward any sort of handling or interaction with you with something they'll eat. or, handle before feeding time etc. go slow, don't be afraid to go backwards and to build up again and just be really patient.

my winter white coco, who was used to handling (she's from sue at tufty fluff) has taken 4 months to show the first signs of seeking or wanting interaction with me. she was incredibly scared and very dramatic (screaming the house down) for a long time. but, i took it very slowly and in time, she's come to associate me with treats and with out time. she now comes out to see me (or see food lol) if she hears me and stands on her hind legs for attention and i can scoop her out of the cage with my hands

regarding wanting emina to want to spend time with you - i think that will be down to the hamsters' individual needs and personality if i'm honest. you can work to have your hamster feel comfortable around you, but whether they'll crave time with you is down to them.

good luck!
