Re: I don't think so Mr Hatter!!!!!
I love that story. They never stop looking for a way out. What's really amazing is that, in the wild, they can travel about 5 miles a night. I don't even go that far! The worst escape for me was when I was in the hospital with a heart attack about 3 years ago. Chip and Dale were my two Black Bear Hammys and a good friend was coming in to feed and water them. She didn't lock the tank top correctly and Dale got out and I didn't know it until I got home. So no one really knows how long he was out. I spotted him zipping past my night table about a week and 1/2 after I got home. I was so, so happy to find him. God only knows how he survived. Once I got home I put a small travel cage with food and a water bottle (placed in reverse so he could use it from outside the cage) on the floor with the door open. That probably did the trick in keeping him alive. I had them both for another 2 years after that escapade. My little Houdinis! Mr. Hatter also has Houdini in him!!!

It's pretty amazing he survived that long. Similar thing happened to me with Peanut. She was once a runaway for four days. I was really scared what could happened to her so I stayed up one night just in case I spot her and try to catch her. Around midnight I spotted her comming from behind my closet, ENTERING THE CAGE throught mesh (she is a skinny lil hamster), eating her food and getting out again. So no surprise she was all ok. Maybe Dale also found some source of food so it wasn't a biggie for him.

Re: I don't think so Mr Hatter!!!!!
Hahaha oh, what an escape artist! I remember my Syrian making countless escapes from his cage. He'd build up his nest bedding so high so that he could reach the very top of the cage and open it. We'd find him camping out behind a bookshelf the following day. Good thing he was not a wire chewer! My two new Russian Dwarfs, I think (and hope), are pretty secure in their glass terrarium. There's no way they can reach the top unless they can fly! Touch wood. My white one, Willow, always notices when I open the lid of the cage and tries to clamber on top of her wooden shelter so I think she's having thoughts about it but she'd need to climb about three more of those on top of that to escape. Bless them!

Re: I don't think so Mr Hatter!!!!!
my very first hamster (when i was 10) got out during the night and rather than going downstairs (he lived on the landing) he went into my parents room and sat on my dads face, which made him wake up!
this is also the same hamster that when we first handled him in the pet shop, he did a little wee on my dad! my dad never liked him but i have a feeling Ruskin liked him!

lol, my brother had a Syrian hamster when I was very little, and the little thing hated my brother (Good reason: he sucks at taking care of animals). It would escape from its cage and run to my mom's room and wake her up! She's allergic to Syrians, too, so she found it so annoying. ^^
