Not conventional anymore...
When I had my WW's and they lived together, I was advised on another forum to keep back at least half of the old substrate at a new cleanout and about the same with bedding to keep their scent in the cage after a cleanout.
I did this rigorously, but I wonder if it almost made them fight more because my scent was in their with them, from moving the old bedding out and back in and then mixing it with the new substrate.
I have decided with Opal and Fawn that I'm not going to be conventional anymore, and I just chuck everything out at clean out like I do with the other hams, and only fresh gets put back in. It has stopped the squabbles that were happening when they were first settling in, and it seems that the cage rage has died down a little bit too!

I've been told too leave half the carefresh in there to. Mine do suffer from cage rage also so I might try it to as Mango's is particularly bad!

All the breeders say to just chuck it all, and theres rarely fight, even WW's!
I thought I'd give it a go and they seem quite content with just making new scent every time it's changed

yeah my guys get a total clean out, sometimes some nesting stays but never bedding, and my campbells are very happy together!
campbells do tend to squabble a lot, but rarely come to proper bites and bleeding, usually its all squark, they like to make noise shout at each other and have little slap fights! if the total change has stopped this though thats a good thing, as its never good to woory, as u never know if it will get more serious!
