Default Unpainted Craft Store Bird Houses Safe?

Are the unpainted bird house type things from craft stores safe for hamsters and gerbils? They don't indicate what type of wood they're made from. Also, what about the unpainted wooden balls? I bet hamsters and gerbils might like pushing one around. They're all wood and about the size of a big Super Ball.

I suppose it depends on what wood they are, if they have been treated in any way, and what glue they have used.
