Default Stuck At Home Crafts

My younger brother found out that we could make my hamster (Presley), homemade toys and houses and was absolutely thrilled. We made three out of empty cardboard boxes we have around. One is what he called a "mansion" because it has three sections to it underneath as well as a hide away on the top for her. Then one is just a really weird M&M box we found and thought could make a cool house. Then the smallest of the three was his alone. He wanted no help with it (besides me doing the hot glue which is nontoxic). All in all I think they are some pretty cool houses for her she'll love to explore. What was some of your favorite DIY hamster crafts you've done? I'm always looking for more fun things to give my Presley.

I do have one question if anyone knows. I know dyed cardboard isn't good for Hammys to ingest, but she doesn't like to chew cardboard very much. So, would these be okay to put in her enclosure if I make sure she's not chewing them or should they be something she explores while supervised? Also, I made sure all the glue was not able to be chewed just in case.

I don't think that kind of cardboard is an issue even if chewed. The rule I go by is that if the ink runs when the cardboard or paper is damp, it isn't safe. Most printer inks for home use will run, as well as newspaper ink, so avoid paper printed with those. Commercially printed cardboard is usually fine. Frozen food boxes can have a waxy coating, so I would avoid those boxes.

You will find that by having a hamster you'll never look at a cardboard box the same again! LOL. Whenever I'm about to flatten a cardboard box for recycling I pause and think ... so what could I make with this?

And so it goes ..

Lol I totally get that. I had hamsters as a child who loved toilet paper rolls. It's been about six years since I had one. So, before I got her I hoarded them and unfortunately Presley isn't very interested in them lol. I still keep them. I'm like what else could I make for her with these??

Presley will have fun with those! I'm just about to convert an egg box into a hamster swing.
