Sanitising wood/branches
Hello all! I wanted to make a slightly more natural theme for my hamster, but I cannot find any branches in local pet stores. Could anyone give me advise on how to sterilise wood found outside? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Sanitising wood/branches
I think it’s quite difficult and also not all wood is safe. You can but vine branches from Rodipet that have been sandblasted and sterilised. I found though that they often have some sharp sections/ indentations and the size wasn’t quite right so I stopped bothering. One thing that is really nice - and useful - fii I r a natural setting are the large cork logs- the texture is interesting for them to climb over, they make a nice big tunnel and can work well as a ramp next to a platform as well. Rodipet sell those too and theirs are a good short length for a hamster cage. Otherwise reptile stores sell burn logs but they can be huge and need a good wash as well.

You would have to check that the wood you use is safe for hams & then you can bake it in the oven, not sure about temp or time though.
I like cork tubes or tunnels for hams too, I usually put mine in the freezer for a week before using.

Re: Sanitising wood/branches
Bake for an hour at 100C but only use certain woods like hazel, apple, pear, willow that haven't been sprayed with pesticides or other chemicals.
