Question Capturing Paw Prints?

Hello! Tonight I had a sudden thought that I would like to capture my hamsters paw prints as she walks across a canvas and then paint her name alongside the paw prints (i would attempt to paint her but iím a lousy artist). anyways, my question is what would be the best medium to dip her paws in before she walks across the canvas? i have done some research and if seems people use food coloring or watered down non-toxic paint. The non-toxic paint seems like a really bad idea to me, even if I wipe her paws after I still donít want to risk her ingesting paint, ick! The food coloring seems like a safer bet, but I also want to check to see what you guys think before I go ahead and do it, as I wanna make sure Iím not putting her health at risk.

I think the best paint you could use is soy paint. Problem is its kind of hard to find in some places. You can also diy paint fairly easily with flour, water, and something for pigment- be it food colouring or mashed up foods like carrots or berries.
Another slightly more difficult diy is tempera paint. it's been used all the way back since the early renaissance and is quite literally just egg yolks mixed with pigment. It's how those golden biblical paintings were done! It can be a bit finicky to get the right consistency so I don't think other foods as colour would work too well, food colouring would be your best bet. With egg tempera make sure if you use it as a paint to do thin layers and let them fully dry before applying another layer.

oh wow thank you for so many great ideas! i’m definitely gonna look into getting soy paint but i also really like the idea of possibly using mashed raspberries as I definitely know that’s completely safe for her thanks for the info!

Personally, I would start with veggies or fruits that have a lot of pigment (beets, berries, etc.). You can mash by hand or use a blender. If the food paints don't satisfy you, then I would try nontoxic paints. Erin's Animals channel on YouTube makes a lot of of hamster-safe paints and she gives recipes, so you might want to check that out! I hope you have fun with your painting project! I hope you post a picture of the results when you're done!

I would definitely let her walk through mashed berries or veg straight onto paper because she's going to lick and clean her paws for ages afterwards.

To use any kind of paint, even non toxic one or anything that wouldn't appeal taste wise wouldn't be fair on the hamster.

It's not only a safety matter. It would be like someone making me lick a herring and i absolutely detest the taste and smell of fish. Yuk!

I noticed a doggie paw print capture kit advertised on Instagram and thought it might work for a hammy... it's from this place called dogcatgift.com and it works by a transfer sheet so the pets paw doesn't come into contact with ink. Might be worth investigating!
