Default Looking for alternative to craft sticks

I'm actually making a large house for my chinchillas, but I don't feel very safe using craft sticks due to how bad they splinter. So basically, I was hoping someone could tell me a better wood alternative to making a wood house for hamsters but in giant size.
I found this but from what I recall bamboo splinters badly as well. I was hoping that the increased thickness would help support weight and give me a few more seconds to stop them from chewing it. I'd prefer it be made from something chew-safe but I don't think I'm going to find something like long flat apple wood sticks. I do know they won't be left alone with it. But one of my girls takes BIG bites out of stuff. One bite on a new book I bought and I grabbed it immediately and a huge chunk was gone. I'm currently using cardboard boxes that I bought since the ones I get stuff shipped in are filthy. But, cardboard only takes me so far in what I can manage to make. They're both old so they aren't as active, but they get bored very easy and I thought since I need to take my mind off of grief that a project would be good for me.
