I have read cuprinol garden shades is hamster safe to paint hamster toys ect. Does anyone know if this is correct? If it is, is it still safe if they chew. As hoping to buy some of the tester pots

I know some people use it & it should be safe but I really don't how safe it is if it's chewed tbh, I've only used for outdoor stuff like hedgehog houses & it has a really strong smell so would need airing out for a while before anything goes in the cage.

Thanks for your reply. Turns out they aren't safe. I messaged them on Facebook and they responded with:
Hi There, whilst the product is water based it contains added waxes which would be harmful. Thanks,

Glad you confirmed that! I personally didn't think it was safe and only use plastikote. The plastikote only comes in little bottles but it goes a very long way - quite thin. The enamel paint/paint on version is waterbased and is safe - comes in various colours - a lot of people on here use it.

Scroll down to see other colours. Our local hardware store sells it as well. I just paint it on with a half inch paint brush.

This one always used to be safe and I'd often seen it mentioned for painting items for rabbits and guinea pigs but recentely I've seen more vague answers to how safe it is for use around pets. Some people have been told that it's safe once it's dry, others have been told that it's best not used in pet living quarters to be on the safe side and another source suggested that it used to be safe but they have changed the formulation more recentely and it is no longer safe to use.

I have used it in the past with no ill effects but this was a couple of years ago so you may feel more comfortable sticking with Plastikote.

Is natural food colouring (shop bought) safe to use I've read some saying yes some saying no. I know it more stains than paints but that would be ok

I'd still stick with plastikote It makes things wipe clean as well. Food dyes could contain all kinds of chemicals. Because something is natural doesn't mean it's safe.

Just bought three colours for 12 quid on Amazon ... They are tiny pots. They are water based so can u dilute them a bit or will this effect the wipe clean aspect?
