Joining 2 bins together - thoughts and opinions?
Hi everyone i was wondering if anyone here could give me their thoughts on this idea i have to join two storage boxes together to create one large bin cage.
My idea is to buy these boxes Buy Really Useful 62 Litre Nesting Boxes - Set of 3 at Argos.co.uk - Your Online Shop for Plastic storage boxes and units, Storage, Home and garden. from Argos. Alone they are 70x38x41 (LxWxH) but my idea would be to cut the smaller side off of two of the boxes and attach these together - i'm not too sure how to attach them though, i've read somewhere that someone used hot glue so i was thinking of hot gluing the bottom part together and then cable tying the sides. do you think this could work?
Also due to the way my room is layed out i only have 130cm of space for the cage so would have to either take 10cm off one box or 5cm off both or have the 10cm as an overlap inside and secured down if that makes sense.
For the lids i was thinking i could cut them down to the same size as the cut boxes and create a hinge effect using cable ties and the lid could then be secured using large bulldog or similar clips - ideally i don't want my ham reaching the lids at all but it pays to be cautious and secure everything.
An example of what i want to do is here
Do you think its doable using the storage boxes i linked?

I don't know if it is possible to join two RUB securely together as the boxes in the picture have an overlap which would allow then to be securely fastened together - I don't know if that is possible to do with RUB boxes. I don't recommend using cable ties - my Pumpkin chewed through cable ties on her DIY Bucket wheel and playbin - instead I would advise drilling holes through both boxes and then use small nuts and bolts to securely fasten them both togther. I don't know how you would do the lid.
I've seen people using IKEA Samla boxes joined together.

Just looking at the boxes, I think cutting the sides off and fixing the 2 together would be feasible, but I'm not sure you'd be successful doing that with the lids. It may be easier to make a whole DIY lid with mesh or something. I think overlapping the boxes slightly in the middle is a good shout. You'd probably have to hot glue the bottoms together because any other kind of fixing would let substrate out.
I've ordered two of the 83l nesting Really Useful Boxes, which I believe are the same dimensions as the ones you linked except taller, from Robert Dyas. I'm going to build a cage each for my 2 separately housed Robos and stack them, building windows on the short ends using parts of an old cage. So if you have any success doing this I'd love to see because the boxes I'll be using are basically the same.
The 62l ones are 2 for 3 on Robert Dyas right now and are only £9.99 btw, if you wanted to get them there instead of Argos as it's a tad cheaper: https://www.robertdyas.co.uk/really-...rage-box-clear

Some plastics like acrylic and polycarbonate and a few others have solvents that soften the material and evaporate leaving the two pieces fused together. You might call a local plastics company in your area and ask them if there are any totes made out of a material that their evaporating solvents might work on.
It would have to be one that totally evaporated off to be pet safe.
Also I've seen plastic welding with heat on youtube but that seemed like more of a complicated process.
