It looks amazing! A wonderful size too - lucky hammy - and loads of depth for substrate too. Are you having a mesh lid?

Marvellous!! I was half tempted to get my dad to make a new cage as he's just retired as a builder so could do with the work LOL
If I should ever get a second hamster I'll enlist him 😂 Think he'd quite like it tbh lol!

I was thinking about using a melamine plate, cutting a big enough opening in it, and instead of mesh, using plexiglass with a lot of holes in it.
Same size holes as in the front plexiglass - but all over

The lid sounds good. I'm not sure if that would be enough ventilation personally. With all the melamine and perspex. I think if you had a lid like that you might need some mesh panel inserts in the ends instead. Mesh is a pain though!

People have been telling me it would give enough air flow, so.. that's why i thought it would be fine
There is not going to be a lot of melamine, just a normal frame
I just didnt want to build a frame- so i'm cutting a hole in the plate.

If i place holes all over the plexiglass, it should be the same as people making it out of mesh, kinda?.. -Frame with mesh-
Using plexiglass is so much easier, and i already have it!

I see what you mean Difficult to know without seeing! But with a mesh lid, the top part is virtually open to the air. It isn't just the amount of ventilation holes but on a hot day it could get quite hot with perspex and melamine on all four sides. A lot of ventilation at the top is usually necessary with solid sides.

There is ventilation holes in the front too, but i see what you mean.
Never gets to hot in Norway, and it should be fine if i keep my window a bit open on the hottest days.. or i might have to get the cage down in the basement... IF it get's really hot.

Ill take a picture of it when i'm done

If it's not working out, i just have to get mesh instead!
No biggie!

Edit: Or i could put in some vents on the sides.

Even if you had lots of holes,it wouldn't be the same as mesh, since there would still be less airflow.Another bonus of mesh is that if you get a good size you can hang toys off it(just make sure there's no chain etc)but this could never be done with the plexiglass. The same applies to side vents as well, they'd also have less ventilation.
