Has anyone made DIY custom-built cages?
I'm curious to see if anyone on here has made completely DIY from-scratch cages. Not things like bin cages and tanks, but actual custom-built cages out of wood, plexiglass and silicone. I'm considering making one (not in the near future though!) and to be honest I don't think it would be too difficult. Does anyone have any experience with making cages?

Re: Has anyone made DIY custom-built cages?
Some people have made some amazing ones. It would be beyond my skills lol. There are a few youtube videos around on making diy cages. Someone on here made a nice one using two large lack tables on top of each other - so the bottom one made legs and a base for the cage.
90cm one
LACK Coffee table - white - IKEA
118cm one (external measurements - you'd probably lose about 12cm off that for the depth of the legs so it's just over a 100cm internally)

I thought about having a go at one, but working out doors put me off. You could mesh the sides or plexi the sides or have a hinged mesh lid or fix sliding doors.

Re: Has anyone made DIY custom-built cages?
If I did make one I'd make it as simple as possible; melamine wood for the sides, plexiglass for the front and a hinged wood and mesh lid
Plexiglass wouldn't work out cheap but would create an ideal hammy cage and a cheaper and larger alternative to something like a Marrakesh
If I did make one, the dimensions might be similar to the one in this video:

Re: Has anyone made DIY custom-built cages?
Hello. I built my own hamster habbitat using and old dresser i used wood flooring pannels for the levels and i kept the bottom drawer and made latch doors for easy cleaning. I love it! Its big enough for her to have plenty 0f room for hamstering! It was an easy project and the possibilities are endless. Only problem ive had is that she likes to chew on the wood of the habbitat. I solved the problem by placing chew toys and chew logs in the places she tries to chew up and havent had a problem since.

Re: Has anyone made DIY custom-built cages?
I've made several DIY cages in the past. I like them because you get a cage with everything you want. They aren't all that hard to build and the questions I had could easily be answere by users on this forum or by YouTube videos! My first go at one was an IKEA Billy hack, but it's so small that I only keep it in case of injuries. The second one I made was from the midsize IKEA Lack coffee tables. I used 2 tables on top of each other & moved the bottom shelf lower so I could have storage.
This weekend, I purchased a tv armoire that I will slowly be working on hacking into terrarium like enclosures, to replace the cages above.

This is my DIY cage. I made it from scratch with a particular dimension in mind: as large as possible while still fitting inside the trunk of my car.

Re: Has anyone made DIY custom-built cages?
I came across an older thread today while looking for an Alaska set up - and someone on the thread had a Malm cage! I had forgotten about that. I'm guessing it's the Ikea Malm chest of drawers - 100 x 80 x 48 - put together but without the drawers.
So you'd get 100 x 80 cm frame with 48cm height - plenty of room for bedding! And I guess it would need a mesh and wood lid making.

This was the thread (it's near the end and you can't see much from the photo)
Would anyone like their cage featured?
You can buy a 100cm cage for that price - but this is bigger than a 100cm cage - and they're probably available second hand as well.
