Diy cage. What height do i need?
I really want to make a diy cage with a plexiglass front. How tall do the cage walls need to be for it to be open topped?
It will be for a syrian hamster, who is currently in a little bin cage;

You need it tall enough that the hamster can't reach the rim of the box when standing up on it's back legs or it will probably pull itself up and escape.
The deeper/taller the cage the more substrate you can put in and still fit a Syrian sized wheel.

He's sooo cute! I'm sure you'll make a really nice cage for Arun! I always worry about flying hair landing in my hammies cages, especially with fans on. When I'm over their cages or cleaning their cages, I have to keep my hair back. Don't know if that would be a problem for you or not? With an open top

I think it would need to be quite tall to have the top open - depending on how deep you have the substrate. So if you had say 30cm deep substrate and the cage was 60cm tall the hamster could still get out by climbing up something (or scaling the wheel!). Maybe a lid would be safer I think I would worry that someone might drop something in there.

I am starting to think that a lid is going to be a more relaxing option.
Just got to rearrange the bedroom to get a nice big 200cm long piece of clear wall to build the cages (one for Arun one for Gopal. Woodstock wont be having any changes bless him).

Hmm - 200cm wall would fit a detolf

True but the delivery cost is 35 making a detolf a tad pricey ...

Have you checked the materials you're going to buy to get an estimate of the cost? It's quite expensive, you also have to think about the thickness of the plexi glass because they could chew through it easily if it was thin. I think it'd be just as expensive as the detolf with delivery to be honest. The height depends on how much substrate you want to use

Re: Diy cage. What height do i need?
I already have a lot of plywood and a lot of mesh including mesh panels from two almost brand new rabbit hutches.
The only thing I need to buy is the plexiglass. Hoping to go for 4mm. Anyone know if that would be thick enough?

Not sure if 4mm is ok or not. As long as the hamster can't get to the edge and start chewing it could be fine.
