We have a HUGE printer at work that prints off the *whatever it is that the guys print on big paper* the tubes are wider that kitchen roll tubes and over a meter long!!
Great for getting Harry back in his cage when he's not co operating. Also I've cut a few down to make custom length tubes. They're pretty thick cardboard too so it's good for chewing.

I love the walnut string idea, I might just have to bake something to use the insides.

Re: Hamster toys and accessories from recycled household items thread
So many great ideas! I need to make more DIY toys for Scout, especially when it's often as easy as 'use up what's in this container then clean it'. ^_^ I gave her a tissue box once, and it got very well loved; this thread reminds me I need to do that again next time I get an empty box!
Now, to find that empty tube from when I finished the Pringles yesterday...

Re: Hamster toys and accessories from recycled household items thread
Gonna get two winter white tomorrow and I'm already making them toys! I've seen a video on how to make these, but I'll try to explain as best as I can.
1) flatten a used up toilet paper roll
2) cut the roll into strips (however thick or thin as you'd like, I like to stay around half an inch or so)
3) cross the strips over each other (this step is easy, hard to explain though so look at the picture!)
4) fill with treats

Do you use glue or tape to hold it together?

I've had several in use for 2-3 years and they are so sturdy.

I feel so sorry for you having to eat those delicious gu puds my boyfriend and I love! You really do sacrifice so much for those wee hamsters of yours don't you! My hamsters love their gu dishes, very sturdy, we have had them a year and they're great. Nice change from plastic or ceramic x
