I'd probably either sand the wire off really carefully and move it to the inside or put wood/puzzle playground around the edges to block the plastic off.
Chances are it won't be an issue though, not many hams are as chewy as Fwirl is lol

I would use the 5/8" machine screws (bolts) as they won't stick out at all when building your cage. that is what we used - they were the perfect length exactly.
