Default bin cage convalescent cage?

We'd like to make a bin cage - elder son finishes his exams soon & could do with a project to keep him occupied other than spending his time on facebook/online gaming...

Willow's got her Mickey 2XL, which I feel is big enough for a Syrian & fine (when she's not trying to chew the bars...) & fits nicely on the spare desk in the sitting room.

So I had the idea that we could make a bin cage ready for if she ever needs a convalescent cage -something without bars or a wheel - that we could stash at the back of the cupboard under the stairs ready for if it's needed for Willow or a sudden rescue hamster.

Would this be big enough Crystal Storage Box with Lid Clear 62ltr | Storage Boxes with Lids | | Plastic Storage from Wilkinson Plus - the dimensions are 79cm long X 39cm deep X 25cm high.

If we were making a cage as permanent accommodation, I'd go for a higher box for deep burrowing substrate & wheel height.

oh I thought some people use that box as a permanent home? I was having a look at that exact storage bin on the Wilkos website earlier whilst thinking about whether it's a good idea to get another hamster lol.

I know some members use that bin as permanent homes and feel it is a good space Morrisions sell one very similar (could be the same infact) for £7.

I think some people do, but I don't know if that's for Syrians? But the reason I wouldn't want it as a permanent home for Willow specifically is that she loves to climb her bars on the sides & roof (we call her SpiderHam & sing the SpiderPig song from the Simpsons movie ). Which is also the reason I thought a bin cage hospital cage would be a good idea. We've got her original Savic Spelos that I've kept as a carry cage, but she climbed the bars in that so it would be no good as a hospital cage, plus it's too small.

It seems like a good sized cage, the only problem with spare cages is the temptation to get another furry little friend Although rescuing is always a good reason.

Having a hosiptal cage is a good idea, the bin you posted a link to is fine, you probably wouldn't need one that big just for a hospital cage though. Just wouldn't be necessary.

A lot of members here have their hams in bin cages permanantly, Syrians included. They're good cages and a great solution for lower budgets.

Lol, so far, we've managed to avoid temptation, though the other cages we've got are just horrid. I think that's why the bin cage appeals so much - we can make it & have it ready for need, & store stuff in it easily for the meantime (all those tubes that are too small for a Syrian, spare water bottles etc).

I know my parents had various rescued animals, including a hamster that my brother found in the garden, & luckily had a cage to use - too small by todays standards, I'm sure, but better than nothing.

I'll get the box from Wilkinsons or Morrisons, whichever we get to first, & start the plan. Thank you all for your comments!
