Talking Jute/Hemp Hammy House

I finally dug out a decent roll of hemp from mine and my mum's macrame-supplies and grabbed my biggest crochet hook and managed this lovely... er... lump of hemp?

In hindsight, i made the opening too large... i'll have to fix that, but then again i'm not working from a pattern, i kind of made it up as i went. Not too shabby though, if i do say so myself

I'm making one more since my girls have to have two cages, and i plan on making the door on that one slightly smaller. Since Purl seems to be the chubbier of the two, i'll give her this one! lol. Yay for Hammy Christmas gifts!

Oh, and i haven't tried it yet because i need to buy some more on Monday, but does food coloring work on hemp?? o.O I kind of want to paint stripes on them...

that's amazing, I wish I was skilled with things like this hehe

found this on yahoo answers for dying hemp with food colouring:

"if you try to use food coloring, add vinegar. I would suggest filling a coffee mug with hot water, add the coloring, then add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar. Next put the hemp in and let sit for about 5 minutes, then check."

camerafreak -- Not that i've read at least... I know they sell hemp/jute/grass houses at the petstores, and it's not painted, or dyed or anything, nor does it have any nasty chemicals on it :-3 so it should be okay -- it's just a grass afterall :-3

Well I might have to go on a crafty spree and see what I can make lol. Thanks for the idea by the way. I hope you don't mind me playing around with your idea to see what I can make.
