farewell song
(What a wonderful sub-forum - I didn't realise it existed until tonight. Here's my poem I wrote when I lost my Marble)
rock breaking sadness crumples my sightline
sky that recedes when almost touched
yet as close as a leaden blanket
ritual cover
for those living with a heart clutched by a gauntlet
how do we learnt to exist in a world
without tangible love
no gambolling glances
no fluttering whiskers to scout every strand of the carpet
every corner of the room discarded laundry
a silky robe cord pouched for the stash
no paws to reach out for treats
no pink muzzle to nab such edible treasures
no wheel clicks to cradle you in the knowledge
that love keeps spinning the thread that binds
even in sleep
even at a distance of a few days wait
now pure blankness
the impassable space between caring and losing
how do we learn to exist with the rupture
of the last gasps of breath
laid in our hand
remains of a whole life of 1 year 8 months
wrapped in a stary cloth
once nibbled by teeth that will never again taste
never delight
how do we learn to say goodbye when intangible love
burns holes in our hearts
molten planets turned inside out
at the loss of their tiny moon that made tides
sweep shores into greenness
to stand in yearning and acceptance at the end
my pain isn’t less valid just because
some can choose to deride it
my little sparkle ignited me into a better version of myself
a walking flame in the shadow of pain
my pain isn’t less acceptable just because
I burn faster
my little wonder that lay in a stary cloth
at the end of three agonising breaths
stone cold limbs touching my fingers for the last time
she made my pain glow into a better version of suffering
without harming
my farewell song sinuates through glinting frost on the window
it will soon be life
in the aftermath of the tangible love of a hamster

Re: farewell song
Thank you for reading and for your kind words.
I will always love my Marble. She was my first hamster love as an adult, she taught me so much. I will always miss her.
