Re: Hammy Hats!
Cute for a picture, but I wonder if it could be a little dangerous or uncomfortable for the animal if it's elastic?

The elastic isn't tight, ive had them on all my rats for around 10 minutes and none tried to paw at it and continued eating. It didn't dig in or leave a mark. Id never put my boys at risk for a picture And for Tyrion I just rested it upon his head while he wa eating as well
I checked postage to Canada for my friend and doesn't seem too bad so I don't mind posting to USA
Oh and should add of course supervision while wearing for safety

Re: Hammy Hats!
No I certainly wouldn't and if they showed any distress I would take them off.
I should add that Remy is off back to the vets tomorrow after a course of metacam hasn't worked, we thought it could have been some nerve damage from a scrap with his brothers but looking like it might be more symptomatic of a tumour as his front paws have started to curl slightly.

Re: Hammy Hats!
I'm actually really struggling. It has been two weeks now, I've had some friends around from my rat club to help show me how to clean him properly (he needs it done twice a day and more, his man area is not the nicest to have to sort for him), i've been giving him lots of high protein and his meds. But now 2 weeks has passed with little improvement I have to go back. If it is I am going to try what we can but if he doesn't react to the meds then I have been advised to let him go. I'm hoping I can have him with me longer, he is still sat boggling and bruxing away xxxx

Re: Hammy Hats!
I think it's great you are trying to add to your vet fund to ensure the continuing vet care for your little guy. It soon mounts up when they need attention. I hope the vet can see a way forward on his next appointment.
I think I might just sit the hat on top of the head if I was worried, to take a pic, or just remove the elastic altogether myself

Re: Hammy Hats!
Indeed Souffle, there is a vet fund but where palliative care is involved it soon eats away into it so even a few pounds can cover a bus to get to the vets
Yes the elastic doesn't have to be worn. As I put up top, for Tyrion he was eating away so I simply rested it on top for a photo, same with Remy.
The elastic is a hair band, a thin one and on the rats is so loose you can rotate the hat around a full 360 degrees with no effort, it acts as more a slight stabiliser for the heavier hats. For a hammy, the band fits without stretching it to put it on so no digging in at all (there is a gap at the bottom where it dangles even) and certainly easy to put on top while distracting with food
